January 17, 200818 yr Question 1 Favre. Brady is very good and has had success. But, Favre is the better QB. Favre makes everyone else look good. Brady, not knocking him, has had a better supporting cast that, at times has made him look good. Question 2 Marino, without a doubt. Montana was one of the best in my opinion, but Marino was by what most modern QB are judged. Same argument as above. Montana had a great cast of players around him, with Rice, Clark, Craig, and Lott on Defense. The 49ers had a great team, no doubt. Marino was a great QB and held almost all the QB records, until Favre broke them all. Not to beat a dead horse but, honestly, who has Brady had before this year? Corey Dillon? Ben "winter" Coats? Deion Branch? Those are the 3 biggest names I could think of......I think that says something. Meanwhile Favre has always had a very strong running game with Ahman Green, Dorsey Levens, Grant, etc. Don't forget he had Javon Walker for a period of time, along with Freeman and Donald Driver. IMO, if you play a long time in this day and age you are going to put up numbers. Don't get me wrong, the durability that Favre has shown has been phenomenal. But I don't even think he's in the discussion when it comes to the elite all time QB's.
January 17, 200818 yr You go for the rough and unshaven type, I guess. I always though Brady looked more like Tony Danza then Favre. I like both but something about Brett Favre just wows me! Again Favre is the man! :ylsuper:

Brady has had an experienced OL, Favre last year had a rookie OL, he was running for his life. That is the main reason that last season was not to great. I don't necessarily think that Favre is better then Brady, or Brady better then Favre. But, to say he is not even in the discussion in the elite QB. You are joking right?
January 17, 200818 yr I think Brett is a bit over-rated. He is not in the top tier, in my opinion, with Montana, Elway, Unitas. He throws too many interceptions. He has also had some really tough loses in his career. The loss to the Broncos in the Superbowl said a lot to me when you consider NO ONE thought the Broncos had the better team going in. He also struggled for years with the Cowboys (who didn't, I guess). I think Farve has had the better career to this point but Brady, barring injury, will put up numbers and be up there with the top-tier QBs when it is all said and done.
January 17, 200818 yr It seems that a few people have preconcieved notions about both Brady and Favre. I'll ask the question another way. Who is a better QB Marino or Montana? Same debate, different era. In the end, Brady will have numbers to match Favre and a whole hand full of Super Bowl rings that Favre doesn't have. To me, he may go down as the best ever......... Montana was better. I judge a QB by wins. Montana's numbers aren't bad either.
January 17, 200818 yr I think Brady is better, but I like Favre better because I dig the way he talks.

Brady, Elway, Montana, Bradshaw, Aikman, Manning would probably be my top 5 or so off the top of my head. I'm just not huge on numbers. Especially in this day and age when they throw the ball 40+ times a game. What do the numbers really mean if your team isn't successful?

Favre's had one losing season his whole career, but I guess that's not good enough. Is this a Tubby Smith thread?
January 18, 200818 yr Favre's had one losing season his whole career, but I guess that's not good enough. Is this a Tubby Smith thread? He also threw as many picks as TD's in half of his seasons.........only 4 times in his entire 16 year career has he had a 2 to 1 (or better) TD to INT ratio.

January 18, 200818 yr If you look at both QB's over their first 8 seasons, they are quite similar from a numbers standpoint. Both took over as starters in their second season and played every game from that point. Their stats are pretty similar...here are some numbers from these guys from their first 7 seasons as starters... Per season Brady - 328/520, 63%, 3766 yds, 28 TD, 12 Int Favre - 331/536, 61.8%, 3829 yds, 30 TD, 17 Int Best season Brady - 398/578, 68.9%, 4806 yds, 50 TD, 8 Int Favre - 359/570, 63%, 4413 yds, 38 TD, 13 Int Worst season Brady - 264/413, 63.9%, 2843 yds, 18 TD, 12 Int Favre - 318/522, 60.9%, 3303 yds, 19 TD, 24 Int First season as starter Brady - same as worst season Favre - 302/471, 64.1%, 3227 yds, 18 TD, 13 Int The only real big difference is Brady winning percentage is better and more rings...
January 18, 200818 yr I say let them decide it on the field at the Super Bowl this year. They both are in the top 5 ever IMO. I am a much bigger Farve fan but I don't know that anybody has ever been in the zone that Brady is in and the rings don't lie. I will say that Farve never had Moss to throw to giving him a year like this one. Heck I don't think he's even had a Welker. Sharpe was good but he wasn't there that long. Freeman isn't as good as Moss or Welker. Walker/Driver are good but not on the Moss level. Brady gets tons of credit that he deserves but you give Manning or Farve the defenses he has had and there is little doubt in my mind that the conversation is different!!

Brady gets tons of credit that he deserves but you give Manning or Farve the defenses he has had and there is little doubt in my mind that the conversation is different!! Moss is definitely better than anyone Favre ever had...Moss may be the best WR in NFL history, or at least the most talented, so few, if any QB's have ever had a talent like that to throw to. I'm not sure I put Welker on the same level as you do though. I think he's a great slot WR who fits in beautifully with New England and complements Brady...he also benefits hugely from the presence of Moss particularly, not to mention a guy like Stallworth who is a great deep threat that forces defenses to respect him on the opposite side of Moss. Welker is a quick, slot specialist on a team with the greatest physical talent at WR the NFL as ever seen and the most dangerous deep threat in league history on one side, on the other side is another top deep threat, numerous other capable weapons, a great o-line and possibly the smartest and most efficient QB in league history. I'm not trying to knock Welker, because I think he's a great player also, but only in the right situation. (Look at Brandon Stokely with Indianapolis vs. the rest of his career) Favre has played with some pretty good WR's at times in his career...the problem is he's never had one consistent guy over the long haul...Sharpe for a short time, Robert Brooks, Freeman, etc...those guys were good for a time in Green Bay. Certainly Favre made them look good, I have no doubts, but I think they were probably as talented as Welker. I'm not sold that Welker could carry the load if he was the opposing defenses primary concern... That's something that's very impressive for both Favre and Brady, IMO. Neither have had stud WR's during their career and both have been consistently great...Brady finally gets a HOF talent to throw to and look what he does. Insane numbers. The funny thing is, Favre campaigned hard for the Packers to get Moss this off-season...imagine what he could have done this year with Moss to throw to and how good Green Bay would have been... Had it played out that way, the stories could easily be reversed, IMO. We could be wondering whether the Packers could run the table and whether Brady could add to his legacy by beating the "greatest team in NFL history" in the Super Bowl. It's an interesting thought and this is an interesting debate. I can see either argument...personally, I think Tom Brady is the best to ever play the position, so obviously I rate him ahead of Favre. After that, I think these guys follow (no order)...Montana, Elway, Marino, Manning, Favre...then I go to my next tier, which would include guys like Steve Young and Troy Aikman... I'm not leaving out some of the older greats, but I'm really not familiar enough with them to give a fair assessment.
January 18, 200818 yr I'm biased, but IMO Brady will go down in history as the greatest to ever play the game, regardless of position.....Favre's numbers are great, but in the NFL your legacy is measured by rings, something Brady will have more of than any other QB most likely.
