Top 10 Players in 9th Region

Featured Replies

We are talking about that POY. The only way, IMO Arrez doesn't get it is if Holmes doesn't win region. Then McGraw or Sorrell would maybe have an argument for it.

Other than that, I see Henderson getting it. He has already proved himself at the state tournament. Best player on the best team usually gets it from the ninth.

Last year Austin Hill of Holmes received it.

This is wrong. The vote for POY will be tallied well before the Ninth Region champion is crowned. It is every year. Keep proving how much you really know about what's going on. ;)

Eta - here's the one problem I see with your logic re: Sorrell. You say he has no help besides one player. If that's true, wouldn't that make it that much harder to score since everyone in the stands knows that Sorrell is "the man?" Yet despite trick defenses and getting the best defender, he still lights it up.

Secondly, the implication that some make that he scores because he's the only scorer would seem to indicate he shoots a lot. I've said before that he probably passes up opportunities because in his mind someone else has a higher chance of scoring. If this were an "Iverson-type situation", I would expect his PPG to be high but his FG% to be low. My guess is that his FG% is very high.

So we've got a kid that is the only option (and everyone defends HC that way) and he shoots a high % and scores a lot of points. That sounds pretty strong and legit to me . I'm not sure how many players could swap teams and put up Sorrell's numbers.

I'd also ask you to reconsider your shot at the other boys on the floor. Unnecessary.

Excellent post top to bottom.:thumb:

I don't always agree with what you have to say, but when you post you seem pretty well informed. I respect that. And, that being said, I'm going to argue a post you made in just a few minutes.:thumb:

You can't penalize Arrez for being on a deeper/better team. Arrez is a better all-around player but not as good offensively as Sorrell.

I think if McGraw didn't have a bad back that the Sorrell/Arrez debate would be academic.

I'm certainly not looking to penalize Henderson for being on a more talented team. He's a key member of that group, and he'd be a good player wherever he played, no question.

That said, I don't get all this Sorrell is better offensively but Henderson is the better all around player stuff. I know all the smart guy analysts out there use this like a crutch, but what does it mean?

Here's what I think Sorrell does better: shoots the three, shoots foul shots, rebounds, passes, moves without the ball, finishes in the mid range area, plays help defense.

Here's what I think Henderson does better: plays defense on the ball, handles the ball, he plays better in transistion (but neither is bad), dunks.

Henderson's two biggest strengths of guarding the ball and handling the ball make him the favorite in a game of one-on-one, but since when does that mean better overall?

To answer the bolded posts, don't tell me what you THINK you know about McGraw and his back.

Sorrell is a guard. :banana::banana:

What's your beef with Sorrell, anytime I say anything good about him you immediately jump and have something negative to say. The other too are good players, but numbers don't lie and Sorrell averages 26 plus and 14 playing one of the toughest schedules in the area.

I have not said one bad thing about Sorrell. I've said time after time that Sorrell is the best offensive player around, which his numbers state, but that Henderson and Mcgraw were the better OVERALL players. There's a difference.

Henderson and Mcgraw usually have to guard the other team's best player forcing them to work much harder on defense than Sorrell who will usually guard the other teams's big man because HC lacks size. So while Henderson and Mcgraw are chasing around guards the whole game, Sorrell has the luxury of using a lot of energy on offense trying to get open and relaxing on defense standing down low on a block, as there aren't many big men in nky over 6'4 or who are very good, for that matter. (Outside or Mace and the Newcath kid)

All 3 are great players. But as cshs1 said, you can't punish Mcgraw and Henderson because they have a better supporting cast. They average 18 and 19 a game, while also being the two best defenders in nky.

I much rather have a kid who is a defensive stopper and will give me high double digits every night than a kid who is going to score 25 a night and we still get blown out. If we're going to go on offensive numbers alone, why not include Bryan and Love from Villa??

I guess when Henderson or Sorrell is announced player of the year one of us will have a lot of crow to be eating, and will be more than happy to serve it to one another.:thumb:

Another reply to your bolded statements.

I've never said anything bad about Henderson or McGraw, both can play. Sorrell is just better.

If you think guarding a guy down low is easy, tell that to all the kids in NKY that have to do it every night. You don't get to "stand around" at all. It's hard, and you did say something bad about Sorrell by stating he gets to "stand around" on defense.

I'll eat no crow, nor accept any, if either Sorrell or Henderson is POY. Henderson may get it, and that's not like a travesity or something. He's really good. I'll just think the voters may have slightly missed the best player. And, if Sorrell does win it, I won't expect any crow from you, as you'll see things just a bit differently, which is fine as well. A year from now, they'll all be playing again, which is a good thing.

Sorrell = Great Player

Holy Cross = 12-16 or 13-15 final record

I don't think he will get POY with that record. The 6 points against Holmes at HC won't help either.

1. Arrez Henderson-Holmes-Possibly the best athlete and defender in KY. Leader of the #1 Holmes Bulldogs. Scores when he wants.

2. Greg McGraw-Highlands-By sitting out last season he made people foget how good he was supposed to be. Great scorer and defender. Needs to stay healthy.

3. Nick Simpson-Highlands-Out with a broken hand till late Feb. Signed with NC A&T and they got steal of good guard.

4. Corey Sorrell-Holy Cross-His off season growth spurt makes him even better. He goes from a spot up 3pt shooter to a all around good player.

5. Michael Grimes-CovCath-Get him the ball and he will score. CovCath's offense needs to revolve around this senior who is also a defensive standout.

6. David McFarland-Boone-Injuries have led to his slow start. People around HS basketball know that this 6'4" SG is an all around player.

7. Mitch Shover-CovCath-He's the best true PG in the 9th region. Follows the shadows and play alot like Nestheide and Tierney.

8. Luke Maile-CovCath-Team leader. Great rebounder and takes the ball to the basket very strong. Not affraid of anyone or any shot.

9. Todd Krohman-Boone-Best unknown senior. Leader of a young talented Boone team. Top 5 scorer so far in NKY. Very good 3pt shooter.

10. Ricardo Johnson-Holmes-Very unselfish. Nice shooter, rebounder, passer, and defender. Him and his brother Jeramiah play are a major reason why Holmes is playing so well.

Players to watch:

Mike Gabbard-Boone-Still growing into one of the best players in the sophmore loaded class.

Stephen Love-Villa-Scores a lot of points on a much improved Villa team.

J.D Schmerge-CovCath-Quite possibly is becoming the next Danny Noll. He is a tremendous 3pt shooter and rebounder.

Chris Bondick-CovCath-When he recovers from a broken arm, he is a scoring guard for CovCath and a floor general.

Erik Thomas-Conner-Speaking of floor general. A spitting image of Coach Hicks past PG Brett LaFalette. He'll have them ready for post season.

Josh Craddock-Lloyd-Great ballhandler and takes the ball to the basket very well.

Alex Hall-Beechwood-Possibly the best 3pt shooter in NKY.

Micah Pugh-Conner-Very underrated big man. Has good post moves.

Cameron Speed-St. Henry-Leader and scorer. Last name says it all.

Up and Coming players to watch:

Elijah Pittman-Holmes

Ryan Popp-Boone

Stephen Kowolonek-Highlands

Jamon Greene-Newport

Ben Bessler-St. Henry

Andy Earls-Boone

Tate Nichols-Ryle

Mitch McLeish-Ryle

So I went back and looked at my list again. Here is how I would rank them after the regular season entering in the tournament after seeing everyone more than once this year.

Also notice NIC SIMPSON is not on the list. When and if Nic is completely healthy in my opinion he is in the the top 3 with out a doubt.

1. Arrez Henderson

2. Greg McGraw

3. Corey Sorrell

4. Michael Grimes

5. Luke Maile

6. Eric Thomas

7. Todd Krohman

8. J.D. Smerge

9. Ricardo Johnson

10. Andy Earls

Fair question. I'm not going to agree on the passing area or help defense. Almost every time I've watched HC , Sorrell has been in the middle of a 2-3 zone to protect him from fouls.

They're two different and complementary players.

Sorrell = Great Player

Holy Cross = 12-16 or 13-15 final record

I don't think he will get POY with that record. The 6 points against Holmes at HC won't help either.

Holmes 26-2. Arrez is looking to make his third trip to RUPP. He is the best player hands down. Throw the numbers out. He can beat you without scoring, because of his defense and leadership.

He sets the tone night in and night out. I watched all of Holmes games last year. He was the best player in the 9th region championship game last year. He knows how to win and the player of the year in the region, should know how to do just that.

Does anybody know, the most times a player from the 9th has made it Rupp.

1. Sorrell

2. Henderson

3. McGraw

4. Simpson

5. Rico Johnson

6. Grimes (although has been quiet lately)

7. McFarland

8. Erik Thomas

9. Mace

10. Earls

Honorable Mention

Kowolonek- Highlands

Housley- Newport

Gabbard- BC

Mailey- CCH

Shover-CCH

Kendal- Dixie

Love-Villa

Schmerge- CCH

AVery= Holmes

Speed-St. Henry

Hall-Beechwood
