Kids Quitting

Featured Replies

I am very disturbed about the number of kids quitting in todays society. I have seen threads on at least 3 schools were a number of kids have quit their teams. I think this problem is becoming very alarming.

We have way to many kids that are playing for themselves and not for their team or school.

We also have many coaches that are coaching to find a better job and not coaching to improve kids.

We have administrations that do not support coaches who are teaching mental and physical toughness and to fight through adversity.

We also have a society that does not support toughness. If it is not easy or beneficial to me, i am just going to take my ball and go home. We are seeing more and more kids doing this. I hope that we can get this changed or we are going to have a whole generation of kids who do not work for anything and quit when it gets a little tough.

I have to agree with ya. Its also the parents. Some parents push sports on kids and make them play. When a child is pushed to do something they dont want to do whatever it is that much more. We as adults should set better examples for these kids. And the admin should keep their nose where it belongs instead of putting these coachs in position where if you dont win your gone.

So sad but all true!!

While all the above comments are very true, the hiring practices at most high schools are a part of the problem. Am I correct in saying that most if not all schools hire from within the system if there is a "qualified applicant"? Well what is qualified??? I'll bet there are a lot of really qualified applicants that get passed on and causing the problem. Most parents, when the kids are young, start their own team if a child doesn't make the "select" team. Are we just giving them an opportunity to play, or telling them that the coach doesn't know what he/she is doing so we'll start our own? This is where it all starts! Then in HS they get challanged and quit!

I could not agree more. Most expect to be given everything. Parents are a huge problem, but I also blame the media. Just one example ESPN. They are desperate to find "stars" on teams, for whatever reason, but like with the Colts and the 90's Cowboys they like to talk about the "triplets". Manning, Harrison, James or Aikman, E.Smith, and Irvin. Seriously the best part of all those teams was the o-line not to mention the defense. They do not like "teams" in the truest sense of the word. Look how they cover the NBA. Lebron this and Kobe that. Guess what the Spurs are one of the greatest dynasties in the history of the NBA. They dont get near the pub that Shaq, Kobe, and Lebron get. Why? They play as a team, and when they try to make stars of Duncan and Parker, those two are smart enough to understand that it is about the team not individuals. That's why they just keep doing it.

Look at college basketball. The teams with the "superstar" high school recruits never make it very far, unless they have a team around them and buy into the team concept. When is the last time the NCAA's leading scorer was on a Championship team? I've heard it said before, if you want to give individual glory, play golf, tennis or run track. Team sports are at their best when stars put egos aside and do what the team needs to win. Sorry for the rambling.

The only circumstance when a kid should be allowed to quit his team is if he or she feels like they are being abused in some way and all measures trying to correct that have been attempted. Sadly though the biggest reason today for quitting is playing time. This should never be a reason for quitting because that is life. You need to teach the kid to show up every day and work their butt off and hopefully justice will prevail and they will get an opportunity. If they do get the opportunity and take advantage of it and get more playing time, then it is all that much more satisfying.

I wouldn't disagree with the statements, but....

I do not think kids quitting sports is especially new. I remember kids quitting or concentrating on other sports way back when I was in high school. There was no internet (computers or electricity) back then so that it became widely known within hours as it does today.

One of the biggest issues is the number of social things the kids have an opportunity to do.

When I was growing up, I wanted out of the house, I needed to be on a team. Now the kids are gone and doing things all over the place.

And being a part of a team requires/demands a huge time and work ethic commitment and as much out of season as in season.

I have seen kids quit to have jobs to raise money to pay for the car insurance and payment.

I have seen kids quit because it interfered with their social time and ability to do what they want to do.

I have seen kids with minimal rules at home balk when they have rules on the team. They don't have to abide by the rules anywhere else, why at school and on the team?

Seems to keep going back to the parents, doesn't it!!!! I couldn't agree more.

I could not agree with that statement more. I do believe that some kids think that just because they are on the team, they should play no matter what.

Kids can't stand to be corrected, parents never think their kids do any wrong and coaches are never wrong (EVER) and think everyone is out to get them. There are equal amounts of blame to go around IMO. Kids need to learn to accept criticism, parents need to butt out and realize they have to hold their kids accountable and Coaches need to quit crying and thinking they are the ones with all the answers and quit blaming their problems on others. Just be consistent because there are many who aren't. All 3 parties need to step back and look in the mirror. No one is perfect even if some think they are.

I agree with you here many of the things that happen today also went on in the past but few knew about it. The media, internet, etc... has made the world a small place, which IMO is not all bad. You being older than electricity makes you pretty old.:p

Very well said.

Another problem today... a large part of society does not accept people to treat kids the way they were treated 20/30/40 years ago....Today that is called child abuse.
