East Carter 63 West Carter 43

Final. East is now 10-3 West is 8-5.

I thought they were more evenly matched than this. Did one team have a very good night or did one team have a very bad night.

I thought East was better, but not 20 points better. West will be a 16th contender next year IMO.

West had a tough shooting night, credit East Carters defense. Drew Johnson lead East with 16 points, also Colt Barnhill had a good night with 14 points and 12 boards.

East was clearly the better of the two teams. I think a lot of West Carters shooting problems came from a pretty good pressure defense that was put on them. This game probably wouldn't have been as close as it was if the Barnhill kid would not have been in foul trouble. Everytime I have seen them play this year and Joe Coldiron is officiating it seems like he has a personal vendetta against this kid.

IMO he has something against everyone.

My thoughts on the game are as followed:

1. Credit Brandon Baker. He had a good game plan, and the players executed it to perfection. As he stated on the radio, he was not going to let Barker touch the ball, and he didn't. The Raiders decided to give full time backside help, and let the Comets shoot away from three. My only question is how can East lay out their game plan to the public, and West not adjust?

2. West Carter runs NO PLAYS. It is just pass, pass, pass around the 3 point line with one person posting up. How hard is it to defend this???

3. Sagraves had a good night. He shot well early, and as always provides the energy for the East squad.

4. The difference in this game was (besides coaching adjustments) the guard play and thier shooting. While East lacks a true point guard, they did handle the ball better than West, and definitely shoot better at every position.

5. West Carter post defense was pathetic. No fronts or half-fronts of posted up players, and just trying to block shots. That formula = a lot of free throws and easy baskets for the oppostion.

6. East was fired up, West seemed to be as enthused as students in first block biology class. No emotion, no one was fired up. Coaches just set on the bench, except for the technical foul, that was dumb, because it only made the lead balloon up even farther.

7. West is not, imo, 20 points worse than East. What showed was the fact that East was prepared and West wasn't.

8. Fan support for the East/West game has officially become pathetic. I doubt the number of fans at the game could have fully covered one side of the gymnasium. Neither team really has a pep section (especially West).

9. Neither team is probably(at this point) as good as their record. West should probably be about a .500 team and East isn't quite 10-3 good. That said, both teams should be much improved by the end of the season.

On the side notes, while East had great defense, West is an average shooting team at best. C'mon they average like 40 points a game. As for the officiating, it wasn't the worst i've seen (cough, cough..district tournament 2005...cough), but to say the least it was a little inconsistant. Not that it really matters in a 20 point game. West will have to improve team defense, ball handling and become consistent shooting the ball to ever be a regional contender. And finally, this was the most boring East/West game of all time.

A side note. Whan I started school at Morehead in 1973 I was a "transplant" - from another state. When I would ask people where they were from, it was almost always a county - Pike County, Jounson County, Martin County, etc. Except for those from Carter County. They were either from Grayson (or Hitchins, Leon, etc.) or Olive Hill.

That being said, how does a rivalry like this go stale, as has been reported? Have things changed this much, or is this just ther perspective or one or two BGP posters? Are there that many other entertainment options in Carter County to keep hundreds of folks away from a basketball game? Is "school identity" not what it once was?

Just wondering.

East played a solid defensive game and West flat out coould not shoot. Barker only got 8 shots and 3 of them were forced. The technical was weird because the refs couonted the basket and called a charging foul. I won't name names, but the gray headed official should have retired 10 years ago. He was far more visible than the West Carter offense. Sagraves was a big force for East and in the second half Tyler Jackson got more involved and made a couple of dandy assists on fast break opportunities.

Well, it may just be my opinion McPapa, but the game used to be pretty much standing room only, with the student sections filling the bottom part and the top. It was usually so loud, that individuals yelling couldnt be heard over the collective noise of the crowd. There is nothing to do in Carter County, which is the problem. There are a few reasons students arent as involved in Carter County athletics, but I will not go into details on this forum. This game used to have at least a district tournament like atmosphere, and while they are still the biggest games on the schedule, these games bare little to no resemblance to the games that i remember. On a positive note though, one thing that has improved is the relationships between players from both sides. From what i can tell, it is a friendly rivalry, and most of the players chat on the court and after/before the game. Could not have imagined this 10 years ago, but once again i feel that this is a good thing. There seemed to be little to no trash talk on the court, and the play was far from dirty. I do know what you mean though, people in Carter County are proud to be from Grayson or Olive Hill, and very few of us would actually say Carter County instead of the city we live in. The biggest indicater that this rivalry isnt what is used to be is this message board, no way a rivalry game should only have 10 post to it. I would even go as far as saying East/Elliott may be a bigger game now, even though diehard raiders would and should never admit it.

Also, i havent seen the basket allowed on a charge in any game that wasn't the NBA, but honestly, i didn't really disagree with the call. I thought the ball was out of his hands before the contact. Looks as if Morgan and West will battle it out to see who will have to face Elliott at Elliott, definitely the biggest game of the year for both teams Tuesday night.

As for the officiating, are you referring to Bobby Hall's blown call in the final seconds?

How is East Carter not 10-3 good? East is athletic at all positions on the court. Coach Baker has always employed an offensive system with tremendous movement and discipline and one of the more difficult to prepare for. Their players are well coached and execute. They have perimeter scoring threats and an inside presence with Sagraves, Barnhill, and Kyle Baire(spelling?) They are extremely physcial and fundamentally sound. IMO, they are 10-3 good and a top 2,3, 4 team in the 16th depending on a given night.

Oh, i definitely think they are top 2 or 3 good. 10 and 3 is a pretty good record though, thats on pace for about 23 wins or so, which would be quite an accomplishment. And yes, i was referring to Bobby Hall's blown call, but things like that tend to happen now and then, it was just something that came to mind.

Also, i havent seen the basket allowed on a charge in any game that wasn't the NBA, but honestly, i didn't really disagree with the call. I thought the ball was out of his hands before the contact.

The reason for the basket counting was that the call made was a simultaneous block/charge call. Kouns called a block from the baseline while Coldiron had a charge from the opposite side of the floor. Because of that, both players get charged for a foul, basket counts, and because the basket counts, the point of interupption gives it to West. Even though East got the ball because of the technical

Another call the official came in from out of position and made, causing a major problem. When you are constantly not in position to make the call and continue to dominate the officiating, it is time to hang it up!
