I saw on the news this evening that the gym in Leslie Co. burned, due to a fire that started in the boiler room.

 

Leslie Co. had to cancel tonights game because their uniforms were lost in the fire. The news said the gym was famous because Richard Nixon once made a speech there after he got impeached.

 

My prayers go out to those student athletes who are affected by this fire.

That sucks for the Leslie folks. The Nixon Center had just undergone a big renovation before last basketball season, too.

This is sad. I hate this for the people of Leslie County.

 

It was named after Nixon and he made a speech there for the opening ceremony, and I was there that day. I think it was 1978. It was his first speech following Watergate and got a lot of national coverage. That gave the place a feeling of history, at least to me, everytime I walked in there.

Wow, playing there before, and going there afterward, the gym was REALLY looking nice, with a student section, and just all new make over...I feel for the players, not only the players but the SENIORS, who has to go through this...My heart goes out to all the Leslie Players.

Just saw on the news. They reported it was "severely damaged", so it sounds like it may not be a total loss. But it looked pretty bad in the video, and smoke and water can cause a lot of problems beyond what the fire does.

Prayers go out for the school and all the people affected by this.

Sad news for any team, I sure they will rebuild a better one in its place, but impossible to rebuild the memories made their over the years.

Schedule shows the boys with seven more home games and the girls with eight. Will those be moved to road games? I'm sure there is are usable middle school and elementary gyms for practice, but would any of them be suitable for varsity games?

Maybe they can work something out with Perry Central to use their gym to finish their home games. Of course, they may have to move a few games around and adjust the schedule. Their superintendents used to coach together at Buckhorn and are good friends. And it's not too far from Hyden to Hazard, about 20 minutes.

I was thinking there, another close school that comes to mind is Red Bird Mission, Clay County maybe as well...But PCC sounds like the best choice for the Eagles.

Big loss for the community of Hyden. More than just a gym, it was the communiity recreation center. Hope no one was hurt. Maybe Tim can step up and help Hyden replace what was lost.

 

I think the 54th district is at Leslie this year. If so, anyone have any idea where the district would take place? Could Leslie host in another gym? Could they skip Leslie as a host this year?

The Hyden gym underwent major renovations a few years back, adding a stage, which took some length off the floor. Hayes Lewis elem. may be regulation, but it is a little out of the way. That said, the remainder of the season will be very stressfull for the teams involved.
