You have never really saw Elliott play, have you? If you watch their JV, you would understand. Would you promote a player that doesn't deserve it? There are are about 20 players total on their JV and Varsity.

 

No I haven't seen them play. However I understand that most team will carry more than just ten players on their varsity roster in hopes that they can develop them in a varsity game. Why not allow some younger JV/freshman players to play in some of the blow outs. They will gain experience, yes they might not deserve it. However they get to make mistakes in a varsity game while being coached by the varsity coach. You might not win games by as much, but two to three years down the road when other players have left at least hopefully you might have some younger players that have experience.

 

Honestly, after this senior and junior class leave Elliott what will be left for Elliott Co? Maybe a banner or two. But you have to constantly be looking at the future, even in those blowouts, you got to look to get the younger guys experience.

The younger players play on the JV. If they do nothing, should they play on the Varsity, without earning it?

After the first 10 players, Elliott has virtually noone with really any JV game time prior to this year. You must put kids in situations where they have some chance of success. As soon as Elliott put in the two younger guards the other teams immediately use their starters and press. These players can learn nothing by not being able to get the ball across half court as the other team tries to avoid embarassment by forcing turnovers. That being said, Elliott would be well advised to allow the bench a little more time, if only to keep the starters fresh later in the season. That's only an opinion and a coach with Mays' experience certainly has earned the right to do what is right for his team. I have seen the JV play and I am not of the opinion that Elliott should dress any more than 10 for varsity games. Those kids need to learn how to play at a level where they can be competitive before they are promoted to the varsity. Small school's talent runs in cycles. This level of talent comes around very rarely, if ever, and regardless of playing time Elliott will certainly slip in a couple of years.

Well from what I read earlier in this thread is that Elliot Co. only carries 10 players on their varsity roster. That's great for them. I'm know for a fact that you can carry more than that on your roster. I don't care if there isn't anyone else who "deserves" it.

 

Let's take Pendleton Co. for example (Nothing against Pend Co. they are a formidable basketball program with a possibly good upside and new coach). Coach Buddy Biggs was there about 3 or 4 years ago. He had 7 really good players. Coach Biggs chose to play those 7 players for the majority of most games even when some of the outcomes were already decided before the 4th quarter. Well, those players were seniors and juniors. When those players left, Pendleton Co took a plunge. I really feel that this maybe a direct result of not playing/developing players.

 

Winning by 40-50 points does nothing for a team when your not trying to develop younger players.

 

Elliot fans, pay attention to the Brossart vs Mason Co. score tomorrow. Mason Co probably will end up beating Brossart by 30-35 points. However, I'm going to bet you that Miller plays about 16 minutes, Middleton with about 20, and Setty with about 20 minutes too (that's Mason Co.'s top 3). Mason Co. probably wants to develop a player or two. Sooo, they play some sophomores and freshman who probably "don't deserve to be on the varsity team". My guess is Mason Co's top 8 is on the bench most if not all of the fourth quarter. But they play them, in a varsity game against a varsity team, allowing the varsity coach to coach / develop them. Those kids might not be deserving of being on the varsity team, but at least they get to make mistakes in a varsity game and get to learn from them.

 

Understand there is a right and a wrong way to "blow" people out. Mason Co. does it the right way.

sixth man they are done. The four other guys with one starter in couldn't hold a 40 pt lead for half a quarter. I agree with sportsfan, from what I saw Mays trys to mix it up

As a EC fan I can agree with most of your post. I think that on the defensive side they probably have 8 kids that could compete, but on the offensive side of the ball yeah it would probably be 6. And as for having a 7or 8 deep bench were all of the kids could compete with the likes of Mason or Lex Cath. What school the size of Elliott, regardless of region can say that?
