Ok, this is probably a really dumb question, but I am going to ask it anyway. There is an All A tournament I keep reading about. Is there a All AA tournament? I have heard the All A gives the small schools something to play for. But what about the middle size schools? In Ohio and Indiana they have state tournaments divided into classes based on school size. Why does KY have an all inclusive state tournament (all schools in one bracket), but also an All A tournament? What about the AA's?

 

Does my question make sense? If so, please help me understand this...

Unfortunately, in basketball people are stuck on the Sweet 16 and really do not care about the medium size schools. In every region the teams at the top are the biggest except for some private schools (that IMO have an advantage) Every once in a while a small non-private school will make it to the Sweet 16. That just gives hope to the others.

 

All A is run by a private Company and is not recognized as a "real" state tournament except to the small schools that get to participate.

So why wouldn't the private company want to do the same for the AA's? Sounds like the middle sized schools are really stuck in the middle with no options when you take into account that the All A satisfies the small schools, and the private/big schools feast on the "real" tournament......

I agree with you but I would rather have classes of basketball so that they are recognized State titles.

I couldn't agree more. Isn't there like 5 or 6 class sizes for football?

The Bluegrass State has practically the ONLY pure and true state basketball tournament in existence! To travel the path of separate class tourneys is to follow in the footsteps of fools - like those states who border us.

 

Example: Indiana. Before it "evolved" into its current (and degraded and diminished) incarnation, it was arguably the best of the best state tournaments. But petty whining by small-size and middle-size schools - who lobbied and politicked the IHSAA into killing its "golden goose" - has led to the current non-gold goose-egg of a current Indiana state basketball tournament.

 

Please, please, please don't encourage the KHSAA to do likewise! Remember this saying: "Wise men fear to go where only fools will tread." Let's stick with the "greatest show on earth," our wonderfull SWEET-16 basketball tournament.

I am all about tradition....just a shame that only a select few will ever have a chance to play for a state title! Which of course will cause kids to move or transfer and the rich will get richer......

There is nothing to keep the middle sized schools from having their own version of the All "A" Classic. It is just an invitational tournament in which all of the small schools in the state are invited. No different from a Christmas Tournament other than the level of organization and the number of teams who participate.

I think it's time that KY gets in line with the other states. I'm all for tradition but it's time to move on. Break the state down into 4 classes (6 is too many like they have in football) and have separate State Tournaments for each class like the other states. To take it one step further, have the 4 winners play in a Champions Tournament for the All Class Champion.

The people who run the All A tourney are extremely dedicated and literally put in hundreds of volunteer hours obtaining sponsers, running regionals, etc.,etc..It could be done by AA size schools, but I doubt anyone wants to put that kind of time and effort into establishing it.

Going to classes is the answer, but the KHSAA will never do it because the Sweet 16 is the primary money maker for the associaton. It could be done a number of ways and still have one overall champion, but the powers that be don't want to consider this option. It is absolutely ridiculous to have 6 classes, with about 35 teams in each class, in football but ONE class in basketball. No matter what anyone says 49 states aren't wrong and Ky. is the only one in step.

It always easy to say someone should do this or that, but it's whole different matter when you have to start doing the job yourself....

It sounds like you've never experienced the pains that a small school endures. For most small schools, the All A is their season, their time to shine, their time to make a name for themselves. KY needs to move out of caveman era and let other schools experience the excitement that the All A schools experience by having separate class state tournaments. It must be working in the other 49 states.

I agree madman, theoldguy must come from a bigger school or maybe even a private school who has never had to face overwhelming odds just to win a district championship let alone a regional or even a state one.
