AA Tournament???

Featured Replies

From page 93 from the 2004 (first one I found of the many that I have) boys sweet sixteen program. You are correct 24,000 was a bit much, but the total paid attendance in 03 was 104,106 and the total ticket sales were $1,050,833.00 and that my friends isn't chump change..... From page 92 of the 2006 program in 2004 total paid attendance was 111,288 $1,133,878.00 in 2005 114,357 $1,070671.00. So you willing to take a chance that this all goes away, and does Ohio have these kind of numbers or for that any other state?

Again and again I will say, I am not so much against going to four divisions, but I don't want to hurt the other non revenue earning sports by going to divisions and not making the money that the Sweet Sixteen makes now....to lose them.....

Not looking to hurt ANY high school athletes. They should have the best experience possible! And that goes for any athlete in any sport! I don't think every kid should make the team or anything like that. However, in my original post I was just wondering why there is an All A tournament that gives the little guys something to play for, and then there isn't an All AA tournament. Just wondering why not or whatever....I am not gutsy enough to try to take on the KHSAA or do I want to. I don't want to ruin anything for anyone, just asking a simple question that is all.

And I guess I am confused about how other sports are broken into classes and not basketball. If it is only because it is a "cash cow" as you claim, that is a shame for everyone involved with high school athletics!

I don't coach in NKY and don't have any daughters playing in high school (yet) and so being new to the area just trying to piece it all together! ;)

I understand what you are saying, but it took a few men from NKy to start the All "A" and two of them were from small private schools and now some what the private school kicked out of a tourney they help start. It takes a huge commitment to do what thoes men did...and to do this today in the ME FIRST/WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME times we live in, I just don't think it could ever happen again...good luck.....

Thanks for the info! I am sure it isn't an easy thing to do! So is the All A statewide or just NKY?

About your other post with the $$$ figures. I don't know Ohio's (OHSAA) numbers. I am sure they make all their money from Football and Basketball. For basketball, they have all 4 divisions Final Four in Columbus. So there are still 16 teams playing, but representing 4 size of schools.....I don't have figures...sorry :(

I am all about tradition....just a shame that only a select few will ever have a chance to play for a state title! Which of course will cause kids to move or transfer and the rich will get richer......

Occasionally small and mid-sized schools do win the state tournament. Paintsville did it in 1996 in boys basketball. Earlington won it in 1967.

But the large schools have dominated.

Yes I know! I have attended a game or too when a company that I worked for at one time, was headquartered in Columbus, but it is no where near attended like the Sweet Sixteen is. A little bit of trivia for you, that will make you sound like you were born and raised in Ky. :D

The KHSAA owns the Trademark to the term "Sweet Sixteen" and allows the NCAA to use it free each year!

The All "A" is now a state wide Tourney and is pretty much run like the Sweet Sixteen.

BTW, I personally think it is a huge advantage for the small schools who play in the All "A" tourney (Elliott Co, Paintsville, JBS. UH, CovHoly Cross, NCC, BB etc.) to get ready for the Sweet Sixteen.....

Oh how I remember that 67 game :cry::cry:

I do too. I was pulling for Breathitt County, and they lost to Earlington in the semifinals after leading for most of the game. I just knew the finals would be CovCath and Breathitt County, but it wasn't to be.

I would go for the idea, but are you willing to guarantee the KHSAA, that the money that they make on the Boys only Sweet Sixteen is going to be there so you can have a state tourney's for all the other sports programs? Have any of you who has posted to this thread been to WKU to watch the girls state tourney? Do you really think they the KHSAA makes any or much money on that tourney? Do you think the KHSAA could afford to hold a four class Sweet Sixteen at Rupp like they do for the Sweet Sixteen over the course of the number of day/nights that they would have to run a four class tourney? Name me a sport other than the Boys Sweet Sixteen that brings in the money to operate the KHSAA as they do today, and if you say Football think again. Thankfully when "T" plays St. X it's Christmas day for the KHSAA, as those two schools pack the Pizza Box, but the others classes no way. Unless someone comes up with an idea to have what you all want and to keep the cash cow alive, it is totally unfair to all the other sports and kids that games don't make the money to have a state tourney. It's just not about the small schools or the middle or even the large size schools, it's about the running of all the sports programs, for all the schools and all the sports, that are never going to make enough money to operate, and thats why the Boy's Sweet Sixteen is so important to me. I hate it that it all about money, but sorry, thats life. So you have a choice, have the KHSAA stop hosting all the non marquee sports that they do, or keep the cash cow alive. In Kentucky at least I don't see how you can have both....

BTW if you don't know who I follow, then welcome to BGP's, for you must be new!

I knew who you rooted for I was being sarcastic something I thought you would recognize, my mistake for giving you that much credit.

Who gets all this money you are talking about? I believe the 16 teams that qualify get there cut but the other hundreds of teams that didn't qualify get nothing. Sounds like the rich keep getting richer. If I was involved with a school that consistently went to the Sweet 16, I definately wouldn't want a change. Why give up the sweet money we get for participating each year? If you went to 4 classes, this dominate team won't get their large chunk of change, only a fourth of it. The remaining money will be spread to the other schools who participate in the other classes. What's wrong with that? Spreading the wealth sounds like a good idea to me. The current system is much like the business world. The big guys rule and they keep getting richer.

No teams that qualify for the Sweet 16 get any cut of the gate. They get their rooms paid for while they are in the tournament. But, they do not get any cut whatsoever.

Thanks for the info and history of the Sweet Sixteen. That is good stuff. Good history and tradition.

True. It costs quite a bit for teams to play in the state tournament. Many schools cover the costs by getting donations from a their community businesses and fans. If not for this they would actually lose money. Some may anyway.

Now, the All A organizers in Richmond are more generous to the competing schools. They cover the rooms, and also give a stipend to help offset the cost of meals.

If that's the case, why is that different from the Regionals? In the Regionals, teams do get a cut from the gate whether they play one game or three. That's an extra incentive for the schools to make the Regionals.

Thats so very true... What the KSHAA gives you to eat, sleep and get there, maybe it was enough in 1960 but today? It costs the schools and or in some cases the parents of the kids playing a good chunk of change, for the privilege of playing in the State Turnament....

Just ask a few NDA parents......

BTW, thats why I told Madman to call the KHSAA about his comments, I knew he was wrong... But then, no one wants to listen to me.... "Note I am joking!!! OK!!!!:lol::lol:

But to get this thread back on track, Why is there not a Class "AA" Tournament? When there is a Class "A" Tournament? Because the Class "A" schools and supporters took the initiative some 25 years ago to begin something that has evolved into today's version of the tournament. Anyone could create a tournament like the Class "A" for any special group they wanted, it is just an invitational tournament. You could do it for Class "AA", you could do it for private schools (wouldn't that cause problems) you could do it for schools whose mascot was the Wildcats. If you create a tournament, you can invite whoever you would like. It won't be state sanctioned, but it would be a tournament and count towards your maximum number of games.
