Highlands 64 Bishop Brossart 40

Featured Replies

Highlands much the best in this one.

Kowolonek puts up 9 of his team's 17 in the first period, roll to a 17-6 lead, and win from there.

Brossart had trouble functioning on offense and couldn't contain the Birds on defense in this one.

IMO Highlands is the real deal and the CovCath-Birds matchup in Park Hills on January 8th will be a classic.

We are still paying the piper for having an 8 senior stand-alone ballclub last year. Give these guys a year of experience and maturity and we will match up better with the basically same Bluebirds team in '08-'09.

The birds looked really good last night.. Kowolonek played a heck of a game. I was extremely impressed with this young man..In the next couple of years I think he will be one of the top players in the ninth. I was surprised that McGraw didn't even play at all in the second half. I guess Willie was just letting him rest considering the Birds were up big and they didn't really need him.. Also it was a the second game of a back to back.IMO the BIRDS are for real.....:ylsuper::ylsuper:

To me Highlands seems to be the team flying under the radar. They have been playing great basketball and should have no problem competing with the likes of Covington Catholic and Holmes. I'm willing to even say we have not seen Highlands at their best which is scary.

The Bluebirds are very good and will give anyone in the ninth all they can handle.........if they stay healthy. McGraw is my darkhorse for POY.

Nice work on the website Mustang, it is top notch. You really do a great job. Too bad Highlands doesnt have a nice site like that. I know they have a very nice information technology program up at the High school , you would think someone would have some interest in seting up a site and maybe broadcasting games.

So Highlands coach used to coach at BB?

Yes, and the BB coach teaches at Highlands. Sort of like a dysfunctional family.

Kind of like All In The Family.

Willie Schlarman and Mike Code both taught and coached under John Messmer at Highlands in the late 90's when Highlands were state runners-up, losing to Louisville Eastern.

Willie Schlarman left Highlands to take the head coaching job at Brossart in 1997, where he remained the head coach for seven years, winning the 10th Region Championship in 2000 and was 10th Region Runner-up in 1998. His teams won three district championships and three 10th Region "A" Titles, and we were the 2004 All "A" State Runners-up to Hazard. In 2005 his Mustangs won the NKAC Division II title.

Mike Code left the Highlands coaching staff to become Willie Schlarman's varsity assistant at Brossart in 2002 where the two worked together until Schlarman accepted the Highlands head coaching position (his Alma Mater), replacing John Messmer in 2004. Mike Code assumed the Brossart head coaching position succeeding Schlarman at Brossart, while remaining on the Highlands faculty.

Schlarman is presently in his fourth year as the head coach of the Bluebirds and Mike Code is in his fouth year as the head coach of the Mustangs.

While at Brossart, Schlarman compiled a 141-76 record.

Mike Code is presently 69-27 with two district titles and three 10th Region "A" titles, while winning the NKAC Divison II Title and the "A" State Championship in 2007.

In 2005 and 2007 the Mustangs were voted the Number One Team in Northern Kentucky in the final NoKy Coaches polls.

Thanks! It gives me something to do in my spare time between 12 Midnight and 3am every day - lol!

I think that we showed that Highlands could easily set up a broadcast arrangement from their facility. We had a strong wireless connection, using Frank's Verizon blackberry and used the corner of their "pressbox" and had a great, high-quality broadcast.

Willie Schlarman himself was the person who motivated me to pursue broadcasting our Brossart games, back when he was the head coach of the Mustangs, and we have been doing them ever since.

The website was my creation back in December of 2001. My intention was to create about a six page production where we would report on our most recent games and maybe have a page with the players pictures on it.

The website has expanded to about a 65 page production with everything from editorials, memorials, directions, player profiles, game reports, broadcast acrhives, kiddie camp pages, flashbacks, legends pages, and on and on and on. We get about an average of 600 hits a day. More on popular broadcast days and less during the off season. Keeping fresh material on the site is the key to a successful site, and having professional photos provided by Tim and Rose Cooper only add to the overall quality of the site.

We also produce a professional grade twelve page media guide - all part of being a first-class program!

It is first class and one of a kind. Other schools should take note. :thumb:
