He also deserves the lifetime suspension he is serving for the actions he took in gambling.

 

It was HIS ACTIONS that got him suspended and HIS FAULT he, as a player, is not in the HOF. His accomplishments as the all time hit king is in there. Just not him as a player.

Illegal or not, using performance enhancing drugs is wrong. No matter if it's 1980 or 2008. It doesn't matter. Sure Pete bet on baseball and all, but he is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, players to ever go out on a baseball field. If I was voting for the Hall of Fame, I wouldn't look at what Pete did on his off the field life, betting, whatever else, I would look at those 4,000 hits and how the man hustled every single play that he was out there..

I agree, to an extent. Pete had many, many chances to make this right. He chose to deny, deny, deny some more and when the evidence was OVERWHELMINGLY against him...confess and write a book.

 

It will depend on how some of these guys handle it. IMO, Barry Bonds deserves to be in the HOF as much as Pete because he's a jerk as well...

But the problem is, Pete accepted the ban. I am assuming that none of today's players will take the bad advice that Pete took and ACCEPT the ban.

 

Remember, he AGREED TO THE BAN.

I'm not sure you could get that answer if you asked Pete himself...

Point being he bet on Baseball as a manager. He should be in because of what he did on the field not off or after his playing days.

Zero integrity as a manager leads one to believe he had zero integrity as a player. Problem is, like I said in my first post, you can no longer believe anything Pete says.

 

We could go back and forth all day. Bottom line, Pete's the reason Pete is not in the HOF. Pete agreed to the lifetime ban and now Pete's realizing he's not bigger than the game.

I'm not sure about that, but I heard him say in a interview once that he only bet on his team to win, never to lose....not that that makes it right.
