December 17, 200718 yr John Madden has a knack for saying things that just makes me ask, what? I refer to them as, "Maddenisms". I just heard him say, after the Giants stopped the Redskins one yard short of the first down, on third down; "That is what you try to do, is to run and tackle them before they get a first down, so you can get the ball back". What? Is that the key to playing defense? I did not know that. I hope every defensive coordinators was watching for this golden nugget of football philosophy. But, on the other hand, the cat is now out of the bag, now everyone will be doing this, offenses around the world will no longer be able to score, now that defenses know that they are supposed to tackle the ball carrier before they can get a first down, so you can get the ball back. Look out Patriots, everyone now knows how to stop you from winning. My all time favorite "Maddenism" is: "A first down is not only a first down, but it is a whole new set of downs". Another favorite is: "Joe Theisman broke the tibia of the lower leg". Like you have a tibia of the upper leg.

I thought if we could kick field goals as soon as we got in range, we would get the ball more and win the number of possession war. Oh well, back to the drawing board. Every time I hear him say these things, I just think: this guy has a Super Bowl ring, as a coach:scared:. I have to surmise that he had a very good coaching staff.

Its kinda vulgar but one of the best things Ive ever read. I laughed non stop from beginning to end. Actually it was a guy named Ethan Albright who played for the Redskins who wrote the letter because he was the lowest rated player (53) on Madden 07. If you do a google search for it you should find it. Freakin hysterical.
