Was the SEC title game a big deal back then? No. Most of those moves were on the cusp of big money network deals and bowl sharing promises. If you can find me one link pointing to a Conference Title Game for the old Big 8 or SEC, I'll listen...

December 18, 200718 yr Great hire. Rodriguez will be a hit in Michigan, IMO...and should bring some balance back to the OSU rivalry...or put Michigan back on top. I don't understand why people think this is a bad hire...or comments like, I'd rather be at West Virginia than Michigan. That's ridiculous. Michigan is one of the most elite football coaching jobs in the nation...probably a consensus top 5 job. West Virginia doesn't compare. West Virginia fans should thank Rodriguez for what he's done for their program in getting it to an elite level in recent years...now they need to find the right guy to keep it going. They're in the same boat as U of L was last year, IMO...they have to replace the guy who put them on the big boy radar. And, that's not always easy... Back to UM and Rich...I'm pretty excited to see how it plays out and to see him bring an exciting and dynamic offense to Ann Arbor and the Big Ten. And, the Wolverines may not have got their first choice (Les Miles), but IMO, they got a better coach. Rodriguez is better than Miles and he'll do better at Michigan than Miles would have.
December 21, 200718 yr Wow! Appears Rich Rodriguez has fired the entire remaining staff in AA. I am unsure about this move. Need to keep the recruits we have and smooth over some Michigan traditionalist. I trust in Rodriguez and will give him the benefit of the doubt. He knows alot more than I do.

Read the book "Bowls, Polls and Tattered Souls" by Stuart Mendel (SI writer). He goes into great detail about the hold-ups for a FBS playoff.

They hold ultimate power over the NCAA here...

But the NCAA doesn't even regulate the bowls...you would have to get bowl sponsers to pull tv contracts and tie-ins, which has a lot to do with specific bowls like the Rose. I guess what I am saying is the presidents could fall in line and we could still be years from getting a playoff in the FBS.

If they let the NCAA in, it would be with those Bowl sponsors best interest in mind. TV deals would rocket to heights, and local interest in tickets at said Bowls jump as well. The missing link is the schools wanting to retain power (see money) without the NCAA getting a slice of the pie...

Not necessarily...it is in the best interests of the bowl sponsors to keep the current system in place, you know this from the book (and common sense, I'm sure). The missing link is the schools wanting to retain power (see money) without the NCAA getting a slice of the pie. This is very true and a great point for the BCS conferences. The non-BCS conferences would disagree with you and those presidents would tell you they would go for a playoff in a heartbeat. Again, I love the discussions on this website!!! :ylsuper:

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. It would be very easy to involve almost all bowls involved in a 2 tournament system like you see in basketball. As the stakes rise in each tournament, the big money bowls in place still get paid, and get paid what I see as more because of the national love for the game. The lower Bowls still fight the same fight, but have a better chance of landing the random power on a down year. I will agree that right now the Bowl cities have the Presidents by the stones just as much as it's the opposite. I just think with the Presidents in line with letting the NCAA in, the cash overflow would be remarkable...

Don't forget these mid-level bowls-the Chick-Fil A people would want an important bowl game, but how could you give them a better game than the Alamo folks, and so on. Also, non-BCS conferences would now have as much influence in the postseason system as BCS Conferences. It all comes back to money, as you said, but the presidents are only one hand, although a major one, in the postseason cookie jar that would have to be greesed to make a playoff happen.
