Since you've chosen me to :argue: with, I guess I better respond?? I too know many fans on both sides, as well as with other district rivals of both teams. None, again none of them expected Brossart to win the game, and most doubted they could keep it under double digits--They just lost too much and return too little experience!! The prediction thread had zero folks pick the Mustangs, and most thought it would be a game in the mid to high teens. I went simply because it's a great atmosphere and a fun game which approximates a district/regional tourney game.

 

How could anyone argue that the Camels "got lucky"? They had the game in hand from start to finish as expected. Every BB fan I talked to conceded that the Camels were the better team this year, and deserved to win. They (and I) expect them to be back in the next couple years, and I would suspect Campbell to improve as well. You just can't give Scott Code 800 boys to chose from and not expect long term success??

 

The only thing I would really :argue: with you about is your comment regarding Brossart's easy schedule?? My friend you've just shown complete lack of understanding of basketball and the history of NKY hoops with that statement. The last ten years I'd argue no single A team in the area, and few in the state, have played the caliber of opponents that the Mustangs have played. The 10th region opponents alone in recent years would qualify your statement as ridiculous?? Mason County, Clark County, Pendleton County, Covington Catholic, Lexington Catholic, NCC, Holy Cross, the Fifth Third Classic, Ashland Invitational, Bluegrass/Buckeye, etc. year in, year out. If I had time I'd go back and probably prove they've played far tougher schedules than Campbell.

 

Again hats off to Campbell for breaking a streak that obviously had bothered them significantly, but let's keep it in perspective--They beat a small local school in a total rebuilding mode--Nothing more, nothing less?? :confused:

Nice work out there and I really like the way Code coaches those kids. They play sticky man-man defense and are very physical as well. The comment about the kid crying should have been left out IMO.

Stop using the SMALL SCHOOL crutch....In NKY it just doesn't have any cred......private vs public is more of an issue. It is a great thing to have because when you win it is a great triumph as a "David vs Goliath" scenario, but when you lose it is always, well we are, "a small fish in a big bond" analogy.

 

BROSSART actively goes and recruits their kids from St. Joe's, St. Mary's and St. Peter & Paul and I have no problem with that. So they have their resources for talent so stop giving everyone the, "We are just a small town school.....woe as me argument". As with powerhouse programs the main thing that brings in the good players is winning...i.e. Highlands, Beechwood, NCC, and CovCath. Your statement "They beat a small local school in a total rebuilding mode--Nothing more, nothing less".....doesn’t do much for your program. Here I thought you guys (BROSSAR) were one of the top HOOPS programs in NKY (at any size)......I guess I was wrong.

 

Down or up either way.....CAMELS had the better team from top to bottom, from start to finish. I do commend you for stating that in your post, however, you need to get away from that SMALL SCHOOL stuff as it just doesn't fly.

We shall see if Scott Code can truly get the best out of that program out there. Its obvious that the Camels for their size should be playing at a better level. They sound like they are playing very well under his tutelage. If Verst and Parks come back soon they could make a run in the 10th. Or atleast reach the finals because I think Mason is the best in the state at this point.

Absolutely agree MASON Co. head and shoulders above everyone else. It will either take a team to go and play mistake free all night while MASON has an off night (can happen i.e. BRACKEN vs. BROSSART district a few years back) or MASON Co runs into some injuries to key players (which I don't want to see happen) for them to lose. Loved watching lofton play against the CAMELS and MUSTANGS and same goes for MILLER. Having any team from the 10th cut the nets down at STATE would be welcomed.

 

 

Unless something has changed wouldn't look for VERST to be back. PARKS suspension should be up soon. Having another true PG will give them some much needed depth at that position. Just hope in any scenario if and when one or both comeback it doesn’t hurt the current team chemistry.

You can go back ten years in any programand find that they played someone. I'm referring to this years lineup. Granted this year they obviously knew they would be rebuilding and lightened the schedule a little (no 5/3rd, no AIT, no BG/Buckeye, etc.) but still kept heavyweights such as CCH, Highlands, etc. It appears to me by heading to the Leota Massey at Deming they are concentrating on the "A" as the regional is there as well??

 

Regarding the earlier post about Mason, they are light years ahead of anyone else in the 10th this year; and shouldn't be challenged in the region. I know anything can happen, but it would take a monumental upset, or heaven forbid a rash of injuries for them not to win the 10th.

I know this is getting a little far in the future, but with only three seniors lost next year, next year could be the best CCHS team in a while...

A few thoughts on the overall discussion on this thread.

 

1) Our school district is St. Joe, Cold Spring; St. Mary, Alexandria; St. Joseph - Camp Spring; Sts. Peter and Paul, California; St. Philip, Melbourne; and St. John - Wilder.

 

It is unfortunate that we have to "actively recruit" our own kids - but we do. There is much peer pressure and outside influences from NCC and even CovCath, along with Campbell County that we have to compete with.

If we got every graduating student from each of the aforementioned grade schools we would still be a "small school."

Ideally we would have a junior high on our campus that actively fed Brossart High School right up through high school but we don't, therefore we have to "recruit" our own district grade school students.

 

2) Our basketball team graduated 8 stand-alone seniors last spring. Our leading career returning varsity scorer coming into this season is senior Greg Stortz - 26 career varsity points. No present varsity player saw any amount of meaningful varsity playing time last year. This is a total re-building year. Next year we will return at least seven players with meaningful varsity experience and will be more positioned to compete from opening day. This year we all knew that we would suffer some growing pains and are presently seeing that become reality.

 

3) Our goal with this team is to win our sixth consecutive 10th Region All "A" and get back to Richmond. We have until late January to get this team in position to achieve that goal. Our schedule reflects this. We are still bona fide members of NKAC Division II and will play Newport, Lloyd, Highlands, NCC, St. Henry, and Holy Cross along with diocesan Catholic school rival CovCath, and district opponents Silver Grove, Calvary, Scott, and Campbell County. It would be unrealistic to ask this team to compete in the 5th/3rd etc.. this season. We shall return!

 

4) Scott Code has taken over at Campbell County (much like Mike Code did at Brossart back in 2004) at a very opportune time. He should have a nice season this year and a great season next year if the team and program chemistry holds up. At the moment the Camels have proven nothing other than that they are superior to Calvary, Silver Grove, and at the moment - Brossart. Campbell only put up 22 points in a half, and 46 points in a game, against a Brossart team that is presently anemic offensively, but obviously can still get down on defense. If we score anything at all the Crosstown would have been much more competitive - but we are what we are.

 

5) I'm proud that we have earned so much respect over the past years that just because we wear B-R-O-S-S-A-R-T on the front of our jerseys that people expect us to automatically be able to compete with anyone, anywhere despite the fact that we are a totally rebuilding program. Those of you who expressed shock that we would be beaten by Campbell County by 21 points this year obviously didn't do your homework.

 

We will accept the fact that we are down at the moment. Mike Code is a top notch coach and will figure it all out and piece it together by time for the "A." I'm sure he is presently concerned with putting our guys in a position to put some more points on the board and more importantly cutting down on 21 turnovers. We only have one way to go and that is up, and you can count on the fact that we will improve over the course of this season and the next. Our JVs beat Campbell County's JVs and our freshmen, along with the potential 8th and 7th Grade classes that exist in our feeder grade schools will put the Mustangs right back on the map in a few years.
