Onlya few played in that with some of the 8th graders but I gotta tell you, those games they played in that league showed nothing. Most of those kids were in burnout stage/playing football or just disinterested at the time and the way the courts and rims were set up it was tough to get into it. I almost pulled the plug on that after the 3rd game. Slick courts, tough rims and small area to maneuver. Out of bounds was 1/2 foot then you hit a chainlink fence.

 

Probably wasnt fair to bad mouth the Blacktop league in this post. More of my frustration was with the attitude of the kids and effort in this league this past fall. Kevin Bundy does a great job with this league and we plan on returning next fall with our group. Certainly dont want to discredit the time and effort those guys put in out there and the games are always competetive.

Highlands has 6 kids playing AAU ball and they might get 1 practice a week if they are lucky. I think you can do both but if the kids are playing in tournaments than it can get pretty hectic. HMS kids play on Sundays up in Evendale, OH and then they might do a Christmas tournament but most of their playing occurs after the school season ends in late Feb.

Not the case at Pius. In fact, its probably the opposite. Pius plays in the weekly Catholic school league plus 2 games per week in the public school league plus weekend tourneys. I remember one year when they played approximately 55 games. Others have been in the 35+ range.

Some schools (do not know about Pius) have instituted a "school games and practices must come first if there is a conflict policy" and that has forced some players to choose between a school team versus non-school teams.

St.Pius's "A" teams always played in the parochial league along with a public league, as did St. Joes, Blessed Sacrament, St. Agnes, IHM, St. Henry, St. Mary's and others. Most of those teams play in some of the larger Cincy tourneys as well.

 

As far as AAU goes, most "responsible" coaches I've been around or aware of always told their kids to to play school first, AAU 2nd in the event of a conflict. I'm sure several schools have instituted "school first" policies. I think Ohio still prohibits AAU from starting until the school season is over?

Do you know why Pius did not have an 8th grade girls team last year? I thought that was really strange.

I watched our purple Campbell County 7th grade team take the Pendleton Co 7th team out the first round at Harrison County Tourney, as did Bracken Co took out the Cats. The next day they came back as the 5th seed and beat us in the finals. In my mind, our purple and PC 7th are the best that I have seen. I will clarify that I have not seen the school teams in our league from Kenton County and Highlands. I know we go up against the Cats tomorrow night, should be a great game.

Good post summing up that weekend. I think we will see some good basketball tomorrow night. We went over to Williamstown and came in 2nd to a strong Wolfpack AAU team.

McGovney can drop 40 on you if you dont find him. The Birds will have a tough test this week with the Purples. Taking care of the ball against the press will be the key in this one. Good player to watch over the next few years is McGovney, he looks like he may grow to 6'6.
