How are the gate proceeds distributed for the playoffs?

Featured Replies

Can someone in the know please tell me how the gate proceeds for the playoff games are distributed.

Does the home team have discretion to use it any way they see fit, just like a regular season game? Is it divided between the two schools playing in a particular game? Is it sent to the KHSAA to distribute? Or is it handled in some other way?

I was always under the impression that the proceeds from playoff games was submitted to the KHSAA and then distributed in some manner back to the schools, at least a percentage of it. Apparently that isn't correct and I'd like to know the truth so the next time it comes up in conversation I can avoid my mistake.

This post from leatherneck sheds some light on the question.

... I... have to disagree with you if you think its the KHSAA making the money from the first round or the second round or the third round or even the fourth round. If that's what you think is motivating the KHSAA to allow 4 teams from each district to advance to the playoffs, think again. The KHSAA doesn't get one cent from any playoff game until the championship game (unlike Ohio, whose association gets the gate from all the rounds and just covers costs of the playoff teams). If you think its the schools getting the money, they do. With the host school generally (its negotiable) paying the traveling team's expenses and keeping the rest for themselves...good to have the higher seed I guess. Sometimes the schools will agree to share the gate however I'm told.

LN can verify this but my understanding is that the KHSAA gets zero money until the State Finals. Also, the home school usually splits all profits with the visiting team. I think general rule of thumb is for the home team to AT LEAST cover the visiting teams travelling expenses.

Again, I'm pretty sure that's right...

And kissinger had this to say

Unless I miss my guess, the first round has nothing to do with the bottom line of the KHSAA so don't even enter that into the discussion. it does effect the bottom line of the KHSAA member schools who get that extra gate, however large or small it is, and it varies from what I am told, in the first round.

That is correct. The KHSAA spells out different ways it can be done, but priority one is making sure the visitors' expenses are paid for out of the proceeds.

The long version is spelled out on Page 9 of this pdf:

Both teams playing each, will have a representative(s) agree on the distribution of revenue, prior to the game. KHSAA has a financial statement....http://www.khsaa.org/forms/fb102.pdf which the host team completes.

They determine what method of distribution, will be done, usually 50% on gate, after expenses, travel and meal expense and if voted to distribute a share, to schools not participate.

I talked to a principal about this last weekend. He said that it can be handled two different ways: 1) The host school covers the visiting schools expenses and keeps the remainder of the gate. 2) The visiting school pays its own expenses and the gate is split evenly. In the case of first round mismatches host teams will usually pick the 2nd option--in case the gate is not sufficient to pay both the host's and the visitor's game expenses.

I know the KHSAA doesn't get the money from any of the playoff games but do they set the prices for games after the 2nd round? Heard that last night and trying to clarify...

Only for the fifth round.

How dare you doubt me!

As stated in the link, its a pretty negotiable issue. Remember, this year's host team may be next year's traveling team, so the schools generally try to work out something fair. From what I understand, the agreement can somewhat vary in different regions. But one thing that hopefully is perfectly clear, the KHSAA does not get a penny from any playoff game until the championship game, thus there is zero financial incentive for them to want additional playoff rounds. It is all about letting kids get to play the sport they love at least one more week. Nothing more and nothing less.

A fairer criticism is that the KHSAA manipulates the playoff system brackets to ensure that X and T make the championship games. I don't think its an accurate criticism, but at least there is logic in it. Last year, by the way when X and T could not and did not meet in the finals, the gate was way down and the KHSAA didn't make near the profit it usually does. Don't ask me the exact figure (I don't know it off the top of my head), but it was a pretty substantial decrease. Now for those of you that think the KHSAA shouldn't be concerned about money, we have to be realistic here folks. If you want quality championship events, it takes money to run them. If you want better enforcement of the rules, it takes money to do so. If you want faster determinations on eligibility issues, that means more frequent BOC meetings, which cost money to do so. If you want the KHSAA to provide catastrophic insurance for your children and students, it takes money to pay the premiums. The KHSAA is a business just like the manufacturer down the road.

The schools are already complaining about the membership fees and a lot of them want the fees reduced (not increased) now that the headquarters debt has been paid off. Dues and championship revenues are pretty much the bulk of the revenue for the KHSAA. If the number of people attending the games decreases, the KHSAA has one real option, raise championship ticket prices which I'm sure will go over like a lead balloon on here. That may stink so some, but those of us that have a budget to balance or a business to run understand the need to be concerned about money.

Not for a minute, I just wanted more details. :D

The interesting thing I saw from the link above is that if the teams cannot agree, then it goes to the prescribed split outlined within.

Thanks, LN. That answers my question and clears up a lot of uncertainty on my part about this issue.

I wondered if the KHSAA got a percentage.

KHSAA doesn't get any money from the playoffs, the gate is split evenly minus the home team's expenses from the game, i.e. officals, field paint, security, etc. Some schools will pad this amount to get more of the gate, others will be fairer about it.

Kind of makes the whole NewCath hosting Newport at Newport's stadium even more odd doesn't it?

That's not necessarily so, as the link shows, it is up to the two teams' discretion to decide how to split and they can agree to any of a number of methods.
