November 7, 200718 yr What does tonight's vote say about Kentucky Values? Pro-Choice Pro-health care for domestic partners Pro-Choice on casinos Pro-following the law on the 10 Commandments in public buildings Anti-NRA (Conway/Lee) You could make the argument that the vote was all anti-Fletcher, but how do you square that with Conway/Lee vote? Lee is in the legislature and very conservative.

Fletcher lost because he started the race with heavy baggage and ran a lousy campaign. As for Lee, he lost because nobody liked him. This election was definitely not a referendum on the big issues. The only exception to this, perhaps, being the gambling issue.

Limp fettuccine could have beat Fletcher.
November 7, 200718 yr Author What does that mean it was about the candidates and not the issues? How do you separate the two?
November 7, 200718 yr What does that mean it was about the candidates and not the issues? How do you separate the two?Sometimes people base their vote on the qualities of the candidate more than their stands on a few hot button issues.
November 7, 200718 yr I think Kentucky's vote was a direct result of the growing discontention with George W. Bush. The talking heads were simply Democratic and Republican placeholders.
November 7, 200718 yr What does that mean it was about the candidates and not the issues? How do you separate the two? Because Ernie was so unelectable because of his incompetency that Beshear could've been telling people he was a gay abortion doctor and it still might not have mattered.
November 7, 200718 yr Because Ernie was so unelectable because of his incompetency that Beshear could've been telling people he was a gay abortion doctor and it still might not have mattered. Very true.
November 7, 200718 yr As always, the people have spoken...whether ther is an agenda or not, when the majority of the people want change, they will have it..and the amount of money spent on a campaign is irrelevent. Incompetency (look at W and Ted K.) has nothing to do with it,money has nothing to do with it and party lines have nothing to do with it (look at the last Gov. election). When the people want change,it happens.
November 7, 200718 yr Author Very true. WOW, it does not appear that people on this board would vote that way. There are some that would vote for an inept individual as long as they were Pro-Life. My point in the OP was that if people really vote values, what are those values? Would they rather elect a gay, abortionist, than someone they thought was a poor leader? Few pro-life people I know would do that. I really believe it is showing that the abortion, and anti-gay rhetoric is losing its impact even in kentucky.

November 7, 200718 yr Author Just because someone votes a Dem into office doesn't mean they are ANY of the above. If they voted Steve Beshear and Jack Conway into office, they elected people who are those things.

You're making a big assumption in suggesting that most people are hung up on one issue or another. That is a small segment of the population, and I think this election, more than any other in recent memory, proves that out. This election hasn't uncovered a shift in beliefs. It's shown that hanging your hat on a couple of key issues doesn't always compensate for a bad campaign, and political baggage. If anything maybe it shows that the people of this state are willing to look at the total picture, and vote for a candidate instead of an issue.
