Push Back Basketball Season Two Weeks?

Featured Replies

That's a question that will be posed to the delegate assembly this week.

Due to the extreme heat experienced in mid-August in recent years, the proposal will be to move both football and basketball season's start dates back two weeks.

This would push the opening of basketball season back to the second week in December.

To me this is ludicrous! It used to be that football was finished over the Thanksgiving weekend, and now it extends into December as it is.

The football playoff system as it is presently structured is a sham. Virtually everyone makes the playoffs and the first week of playoffs is a wasted week of mis-matches.

Somehow they have to figure out a way to eliminate their bye week and do away with the meaningless playoff games.

I don't think that this proposal will get much support from the basketball folks - I know that it won't from us (Brossart).

I think it is a horrible idea. Unless the basketball season goes longer this is a bad idea. And if that is the case it will interfere with baseball. Its just a bad idea all the way around.

Those involved need to leave everyting just the way it is .

No support for that proposal here.

Basketball has everyone in the playoff & there are many meaningless first round district games. what's the difference?[

The difference in my opinion - is that basketball teams play more than one game per week. If the final 16 in football could play their games all in one weekend, the problem would be solved...

You guys are comparing apples and oranges. Football is not the problem. It is the weather. And the KMA and the KHSAA thought that it would be best to move the start date back. Weather or not it passes, we should take the welfare of the athletes into consideration. Basketball does not have to worry about the heat, but football does. I hope that the powers to be do what is best for the athletes and not for the sake of personal gain.

I don't think it is best to hurt other sports either because of the heat. Teams just have to be smart about when they practice and take proper precautions.

How is it hurting basketball they still get more days of their sport than any other sport in KY. Do the math? No one is trying to hurt the other sports just trying to make sure that football can keep their same playoff format and protect the health of its athletes.

They have already pushed back the start of games. 2 more weeks is a drastic change going more and more towards benefiting football and hurting basketball.

What a terrible idea. How does it benefit when you are pushing both back two weeks and you are still not getting the football players to basketball practice sooner?

You are only talking about 12 teams playing in the state finals, I do not think they will be out of shape, and by the way it is only 1 week pushed back from what it is right now. Basketball still gets more days than football

Dont forget Track season

It is hurting basketball to an extent. We will get our whole team 4 days of practice before playing Scott County in the season opener. How is that fair to schools that rely on kids that play more than one sport?
