BCPWFL $140K in the red?

Featured Replies

An article in the Florence Recorder said that the Boone County Pee Wee Football League is presently in the red.

Does this pass the smell test?

They have fundraiser after fundraiser...just difficult to understand that.

Said property purchases, lights, and a new concession stand are part of the blame.

Did they try to expand too fast? Was some of the property purchases necessary?

This is a non-profit organization, with a boatload of people who put in valuable amounts of time.

They are looking for the Boone County Recreation Department for help.

What are your thoughts on this?

I looked online for a copy of the article but couldn't find one, but it is in the Florence Recorder that was delivered yesterday.

I would assume they would open their books to any organization they are asking money from. It it surprising they would be that far in the red and not have seen it coming at some point.

I think it would be really interesting to see the complete financial history of the league and how many times there have been allegations of theft from the league.

No, it does not pass the smell test other than it smells like someone had their hand in the cookie jar.

I agree with Guru...

Too much money coming in to their coffers, and I would venture to say the accounting of that is probably not the strongest based on the number of dollars that are exchanged and all the middlemen involved.

It should be open records, if they are a non-profit organization.

The article had them coming off as somewhat put out by the Recreation Office, because they haven't gotten the support.

If I were the Recreation Office, I would not enter into any deals with the BCPWFL unless their was a complete audit of their financial books.

There should be an audit anyway.

The more I think about this, I smell corruption looking for a bailout.

I know nothing first hand of the league, organizers or revenue they generate. Just a few "approximate" numbers, regarding some of the expenses mentioned.

Lights - If new and installed; 80' poles with standard lighting fixtures, boxes, wiring will cost $85,000-$115,000 and not include installation. That could run another $40,000-$55,000.

Concession Building - Depending upon size and assume 1-story and say 14' x 14", the approximate cost could be $35,000-$42,000.

This wouldn't include any concrete walks, bleachers, hand rails, sod or related. Just offering some numbers, for approximate comparison.

Did they really need to purchase new facilities? Why couldn't they just keep on using the high school stadium instead of getting their own? It would seem to make sense to save up before you go off and buy, seems like a "If you build it, they will come" mentality.

Ah, I read the article, the field gets used way more than it does down here in Mayfield, I understand now.

When you look at the bigger picture, Boone County, Ryle, and Conner deserve a lot of the blame here. All those schools would argue it is Bryan Blavitt (the Boone County Super) that is to blame, I say it is both.

In short, the Boone County powers that be do next to zero to help and support the Boone County Pee Wee Football League. For example:

1. The high schools don't want the pee wee teams on their fields which forces the BCPWFL to play all of their games one one field that is busting at the seams.

2. Blavitt turned down a lot of money from Shawn Alexander for field turf at Boone County (and Conner and Ryle) because they didn't want to have to do any work or fund raising for the project. The result is all three high schools have natural grass and therefore cannot afford to let a lot of pee wee teams play on their fields.

3. A few years ago the BCPWFL approached the school system about them taking over 7th and 8th grade football. This would have allowed the BCPWFL to concentrate their resources on the midget and junior teams. Additionally, it would have allowed kids to play for the schools where they lived instead of two more years of the BCPWFL's stupid stupid stupid draft which has all the kids in any given elementary school all playing for different teams. Zero unity here... Again, Blavitt turned this down because he didn't want to fund it.

When you consider all that goes on (or doesn't go on) in Boone County in regards to football it is shocking to me that the coaches (and other powers that be) from the Boone County schools have the audacity to complain about Trinity and St. Xavier for any reason when their programs are clearly not what they could be.

In defense of the coaches in Boone County, privately they generally agree with most of what I am telling everyone here but publicly I think Bryan Blavitt looks at them like flies on the watermelon. In other words, those coaches don't want to get swatted, and they are playing with the hands dealt to them.

Why can't the pee wee leagues around here play on lined fields at a public park? If you cross the river, they rarely play in a stadium. BCPWFL could play at Central and Idlewild.

That is a different topic but to answer it, why should they have to?

If sharing a facility, transport of food items, concessions, loss of ticket sales, insurance, scheduling conflicts, lining field material/equipment, chain gain, etc....Logisitics and transporting of items, would be enough to test the most dedicated volunteer.

I'm not saying they should have to. I'm just curious why they couldn't work with the Recreation Dept on using the public parks instead of spending money they didn't have to upgrade an already over used facility?

The BCPWFL has grown so much, that they have practically outgrown their current facility. I would think that they would've explored the opportunity of working with the parks department as the high schools aren't going to give in. With using the public parks, each team would essentially be assigned a "home" field in which they provide the volunteers for concessions, tickets, chain gang etc. It works very well this way in Cincy and even Kenton County. However, I know they setup of the leagues are completely different.

The financial records are handed out at every booster meeting that is open to the public the second Tuesday of every month. Look forward to seeing you there.

Did you expect a non-profit organization to have $140,000 dollars sitting in the bank just waiting to be used?

Non-profits just don't run up 140K in debt without something being amiss.

Poor planning or purchasing.

As badly as that league brow-beats people into fundraising, I find it hard for them to be so badly in debt, without something being amiss.

Making parents sign non-binding contracts...more like social contracts that they HAVE to do fundraisers. The pressure the league puts on parents and kids is unreal to fundraise.

How many kids in the league including cheerleaders? 900 to 1,000?

As much as the league coerces people into fundraising, they would have to easily raise 100K a year.

Is there a history of theft in the BCPWFL's past?

Something is really off here...either people are pocketing money taken from fundraisers or others are pocketing money. I would venture to say it is a very loose organization in regards to handling money exchanges.

I don't mean to disparage the league so much because there are a great number of people who volunteer and work hard.
