Kids also come from Kenton, Campbell, Pendleton, Grant, Owen and Gallatin counties.

BCPWFL is an all volunteer organization.

I think it would be really interesting to see the complete financial history of the league and how many times there have been allegations of theft from the league.

 

No, it does not pass the smell test other than it smells like someone had their hand in the cookie jar.

 

Some financial history is available for free online. By law, a Form 990 (nonprofit tax return) filed with the IRS is open for review. I accessed the past three years 990's for BCPWFL. Their year end is 12/31/06, so the last three 990's covered the 2004, 2005, and 2006 calendar years.

 

In each of these years, the net assets grew by $50-60,000. Total assets at the end of 2006 were about $400,000. The league had over $100,000 in debt three years ago and that was down to about $50,000 at the end of 2006. The increased level of debt mentioned in the article is probably due to borrowing money for the new concession stand, etc.

 

I work with a lot of nonprofits and I think the article is a bit misleading. I think the growth in the league has dictated that they need field improvements and/or new fields. I would surmise that since BCPWFL hasn't been able to get help with these improvements, it has taken its request public via the newspaper. One way to get public sympathy is to stress how much money is owed. Typically, debt for real property improvements (which is probably where this debt came from knowing how banks lend money) is amortized over 15 or more years, so the 990's make the league look like it is financially capable of making payments on its current approx $150,000 of debt. However, BCPWFL doesn't appear to, and probably doesn't, have the resources to build a new field(s) and make payments on new debt without additional growth. BCPWFL is stuck in a catch 22.

 

I don't know if there have been grumblings in the past of hands in the cookie jar, so I can't address that. However, based on the 990's, the financial activity reported to the IRS (and prepared by a CPA) doesn't appear to show signs of irregularities. Of course, nothing would beat a good old fashioned audit which doesn't appear to have happened since only $377 was paid for accounting fees during 2006.

 

Also, someone mentioned above that the membership fees don't exceed the cost of insurance. According to the 2006 Form 990, membership dues and fees collected during 2006 were approximately $70,000 and insurance costs for 2006 were $26,000. Not trying to stir the pot, just wanted to make sure the facts, when available, are known by all. And the more important point, that is still a hefty cost for insurance coverage.

The 990's can be accessed at http://www.guidestar.org. You have to register (free) first to access the database.

 

I can't say for certain that an audit or similar services from an outside CPA aren't being provided because there is a chance those services have been donated. However, I would say it is unlikely since most CPA's don't donate substantially all of their time, just a portion. Assuming no audit or similar services are performed by a CPA, then I am somewhat surprised. Reported revenues last year were about $270,000, and with so many families involved, some type of outside CPA assistance would be beneficial. Maybe not a full blown audit, but there are other services a CPA can provide that still provide some level of comfort. Plus, I would think it would be a relief to those running the organization to have a CPA's report whenever rumors or allegations are raised.

 

I'd be interested in hearing if anyone that attends the meetings, or is involved with the league, knows what services, if any, a CPA provides to those running the league.
