How many players does this league have. Here in Ashland we have a pretty big league but this seems like an awful lot of money..

I have a friend who has coached for almost 10 years in the league and I will actually be on his staff next year. I haven't heard this from him. He is friends with the Bandits coach who runs the league.

 

I know they have been having coaching meetings lately, but to my knowledge it was only in regards to next years teams.

The league has at least doubled if not tripled since I was there almost 10years ago. Teams are usually at capacity with many kids seeing little to none PT.

 

They charge 2 bucks a car to get in, the Kona Ice truck donates money to the league. The concession prices are very friendly, they may have to raise them. But it sounds like they need a whole lot more money than just a concession or parking price increase.

Non-profits just don't run up 140K in debt without something being amiss.

Poor planning or purchasing.

As badly as that league brow-beats people into fundraising, I find it hard for them to be so badly in debt, without something being amiss.

Making parents sign non-binding contracts...more like social contracts that they HAVE to do fundraisers. The pressure the league puts on parents and kids is unreal to fundraise.

How many kids in the league including cheerleaders? 900 to 1,000?

As much as the league coerces people into fundraising, they would have to easily raise 100K a year.

Is there a history of theft in the BCPWFL's past?

Something is really off here...either people are pocketing money taken from fundraisers or others are pocketing money. I would venture to say it is a very loose organization in regards to handling money exchanges.

I don't mean to disparage the league so much because there are a great number of people who volunteer and work hard.

 

What you signed was a letter stating that you recieved X amount of raffle tickets numbered X thru Y and this is done because the state regulates the raffle and all tickets must be accounted for at year end.

The fundraiser you are talking about goes like this the first $1000 dollars the team raises the league keeps then everything after that is split between the league and the team. So if your team raises $5000 dollars, $1000 goes to the league the remaining $4000 is split between the team and league. So the team gets $2000 and that money is used for that teams year end banquet where teams serve dinner and give away year end awards(purchased with the money raised from the fundraiser) and celebrate the hard work put in by the players and cheerleaders.

 

The $1000 dollars the league gets is then used to by equipment, every team gets at $1000 dollars a year worth of new equipment.

 

The past 2 years the league expanded because of incredible growth, thats 130 totally new complete sets of equipment and jerseys which runs about $250 to $300 a player to suit up that runs over $30,000. This does not include the money needed to spend on equipment for the existing teams.

 

Field maintenance also is not cheap.

 

 

The registration fee that is paid to sign-up is not even enough money to cover the insurance the league has to pay every year.

I have been involved with youth sports and football for the past 23 years and beleive me it is more expensive than what anyone could beleive. I would not point a finger stating someone had their finger's in the till unless you have proof. Boone County Pee Wee Football is a very good league and alot of good volunteer coaches and people work hard to make it a success. I think they have just been trying to keep their heads above water due to expenses and especially the growth in Boone County. With all the property the Boone Parks have I would encourage them to work with the BCPWFL to help make it better and places to play. If it were not for the Schools in Northern Kentucky the NKYFL would have similar problems. I have been lucky since I am with the Erlanger Lions and we are very supported by the Erlanger/Elsmere Schools. For what it is worth thanks to all the volunteers in BCPWFL and I only wish you the best. JD

I used $5000 raised in my example above because that is the average of the teams.

The league would get $3000 dollars, there are 24 teams that is $72,000 a year. With the minimum of $1000, usually closer to $1500 because of the increased numbers, per team spent, this $1000 does not include jerseys which are replaced about every 3 years because of wear and tear and people not returning equipment, then you subtract taxes, utilities insurance and maintenance it is not as much "sitting around" as one might think.

I didn't sign any fundraiser sheet. There was one being circulated where it explicitly stated you had to fundraise. No specific fundraiser was cited.

I didnt sign it because it is not a binding contract.

If there is 900 kids, players and cheerleaders, and I think I am being conservative with that number, for the Bengals season ticket fundraiser...and each person is required to sell at least 90-100, that comes to 90K total.

After the 24K is deducted, and the rest is split you have 57K from one fundraiser.

I'd say you take in close to 32K in registration fees.

What about the walk-a-thon, dance, Yankee Candle?

$20 or $25 for a season pass....prolly around another 23K from that.

Throw in $5 dollar a carload for those without passes.

Bowl games...all had to pay to get in.

THere are other sources of incomes....

Look we can go back and forth on this, but to all of sudden run up a $140K dollar debt is very surprising.

 

DD, I'm sure you are one of many who are dedicated to the BCPWFL and do a great job and offer valuable amounts of your time.

However, I would venture to say that my opinion of this shortfall and the skepticism of how this is possible, is among the majority of people who participate in the league.

 

Possibly the decision to build the exorbinant size of the concession stand was a mistake. Purchasing the property behind the old concession stand may have been a mistake. Poor business decisions may be one major reason here.

As mentioned previously, the schools in Boone County share some of the blame. However, I would be hesitant as a member of the Recreation Office to enter into a deal with the BCPWFL when they have so much debt.

I am sure there are several ways to make it work and collect more so the parents can receive monies back. You seem Coach Corso like you could give some recommendations are you part of the league or just a parent. You have some good ideas and may want to attend a meeting. JD

How do you stop out of county kids from playing when coaches recruit these kids to play?

Kids from as far as Covington are coming out to Florence from what I have heard.

 

I have no experience at running a league, and really have no answers or ideas.

However, I can balance a checkbook, and no what I have to ability to purchase and not purchase.

 

Do you have to buy a $1 booster card to come to these meetings?

BCPWFL is a great league and do great things for the kids in Boone County.

The Red Devils have played in a Pre-Season game over at their field for a couple of years and they have treated our kids like their own.

It is easy to take shots on coach's and league administors when there is alittle adversity.

Keep your heads up and follow the advice you give your players everyday.

When you get knocked around get back up and keep working.

The cream always rises to the top.
