Over the years I have found a few minor errors, mostly occurring in the 60's and 70's. When notified, Mr. Vessel has corrected the mistakes. It is a labor of love for which I suspect Mr. Vessel has put in countless hours. For example, he and I have corresponded regarding Lit ratings, and I am aware of some of his research. From my own modest research on Lit ratings I can extrapolate that he has spent perhaps hundreds of unpaid hours in the library pouring over microfiche.

You have to feel for all the folks involved in this game. St. X is competing and trying to win a state championship and certainly doesn't have to concerns themselves with not scoring very often, but it is tough. Coach Lucas has struggled greatly at Butler. I am a believer that if high school coaches do the right thing, do a good job in the classroom, and treat kids right they will not have to worry about their job. But, IMO Butler REALLY needs to be more competitive than they currently are. They get a good draw of players and have a great school and community. . . I just don't see how they aren't better than they are.

Hmmm. They are as reliable as the Courier Journal's reports for the past 100 years. Did you know St. Xavier gave up football for two years after a defeat to E-town that ended their 1917 season prematurely? Yep, took a vote by the student body (300 at the time) in 1920 to revive the football team.

I kept reading that St. Xavier started their program in 1917 and no mention of it was made in the 1919 papers. Finally, a small article about the student body vote appeared in early September, 1920. Also, the research requires scanning every daily paper as many games were played throughout the week on fields without lights. If it was too wwet, they'd move games to Monday or Tuesday.....St. Xavier had to ride ferry boats to their contests at Jeffersonville......I could go on, but you get the picture.

 

We work backwards (1921, then 1920, etc.) because some results are mentioned the following year a game was played and never mentioned in the paper at the time the game was held. Central, Fern Creek, Okolona, etc. didn't get the coverage and they didn't have folks call or mail in their results. Until Flaget opened in the 40s, the C-J covered Manual, Male and St. Xavier extensively as these were the only city schools. Male and Manual played by their Louisville Board of Education rules while St. X used the KHSAA's regulations.

 

There may be a typo or two and if you see any errors, please send an email to the address listed at the website. There are some gaps, especially in the 1920s and 30s for a few Louisville area teams. Manual and Male results were detailed in a 1940 book published about their programs. This was a great reference guide. Microfilm at the Louisville Free Public Library of both the Courier Journal and Louisvile Times are the major reference points for this site.

Trips to the offices of the Oldham Era yielded the Colonels modest beginnings. They have scrapebooks of their original editions of the weekly papers.

I admire Butler for playing two of the big three schools in Louisville, and I appreciate that Trinity didn't run up the score on a team that had the right idea, to play the best teams in Louisville.

I can also see why Eastern High School and Mr. Sexton refuses to play the private schools in Louisville after St. X scored 76-0 on a public school that is definately down and short of players. The Bears and their coaches will rebound and there will be a day for them to remember this defeat. Good Luck the rest of the year to the Butler Bears.

What part of the thread did you not read? Probably the part where we discussed the fact that X started taking out starters in the first quarter. Every kid on the sidelines played minutes in this one, and we all know X didn't air it out when they were up. It's the D's job to stop the team, especially if they aren't the first stringers in. X's sophomore back had 3 TD's and I think Duece had his least productive night of the year. I'm not how you can infer that X ran up the score when they played their 3rd and 4th stringers most of the second half.

Before anyone else does it... St X. has to play Butler they are in the district. Male and Butler are the main two Traditional schools in Louisville and have played each other in district for years before this years split so there is good reason why they play each other. It is not a matter of picking on a down team, it is like Henry Clay playing Bryan Station, or Corbin playing North Laurel. They are near each other geographically have history and no one knows how good a team is going to really be when they schedule them.

It is Butlers job to stop St.X from scoring, as long as St.X is running and not passing (and lets face it the Tigers passing in any game is going to be a shocker) you cannot expect St.X's 2nd to 4th string to take a knee from the 2nd to 4th quarter. Butler is a team that is historically cyclic, they go from beating people 54-0 to losing 0-54 every three years, and I mean that with respect because I personally ended my playing days being beat 54-0 in the playoffs by the Bears, so I will not feel too sorry for them because the Bears will be back.:thumb:

Those Butler Bears have a few State Championships claimed over the years.... It would be good to see them make a come back to prominance.

My hat is off to Butler and the kids who are sticking this season out. Cliches aside, football can be a microcosm for life--you get through this, you can get through anything. That being said, something else bothered me about this game. I am concerned when I see Butler is being forced to play freshmen in some very vulnerable positions, ie QB. I admire the young man's courage, but I do fear for his safety. He took a clean yet vicious hit on one of the INT's. I know its football, you're gonna get hit, this ain't soccer, rah rah etc...but he's being hit by guys that outweigh him by more than 100 lbs. In my mind there is a huge risk playing a 14 yr old or young 15 yr old kid against 18 yr olds who are for all intents and purposes full grown men. He may be the best signal caller they have due to injuries etc...but he shouldn't be out there on the varsity field IMO. Put a junior or senior back there, the season's a wash. This young man would have gotten better experience playing against the X freshmen. The risk reward analysis is a no brainer.

Somebody has to be able to take a snap. The QB in question is the head coach's son. He is well aware of the risks and I respect his and his family's decision. If Trinity had lost three QBs to injury, etc. we would struggle....as would most schools.

I knew of the father/son relationship. I hope that didn't cloud the Coach/Player relationship. I respect the player's courage, I don't respect the coach's decision. Again, I find it difficult to believe they couldn't find a senior or junior to take snaps, run the offense and finish the season out. Just because Lucas was the "best QB" available doesn't mean he should be taking hits from 250 LB lineman. The "best athlete" available should be taking snaps at this point. Young Lucas looks as if he might weigh 130 LBS (he was listed as 5-2 114 LBS on his 2006 AAU baseball site) At this point it's not about struggling, its about surviving to fight another day.

I knew about the injuries and suspensions as well...it didn't matter who they put back there--the outcome was going to be a lopsided loss. They didn't have to put a freshman back there. You don't put a little kid on the field to play against and get hit by men. They could have put a jr or sr. running back, wr, te, or an o-lineman at QB(any of those players should have known the offense). You think Trinity would start young Kragthorpe against St.X's varsity if Stein and his two backups (Smyth and Jackson) got hurt? Think again. You'd see one of the Duttons running the offense.

I think the web site is awesome and accurate. I appreciate the time and effort that went into creating it. My purpose in asking if it was thought of as reliable was somewhat devious. The site recognizes the 2006 T vs. X game as a 10-0 win. I know that has been an issue of discussion.
