Last Tuesday, my son and I got in my van to go to school and there she was. Huge. I had my cellphone and was too stunned to photograph it. This was in Lee Co. Ky. My first elk spotting.

Thanks for sharing your story. Not to many people get to experience what you and your son experienced. The KDFW has done an outstanding job of bringing the Elk population back to such great numbers that we now have the chance to hunt them if we choose to do so.

Perhaps too good of a job. Imagine hitting one of these monsters in a compact car. I think that maybe eastern Kentucky is still a little much populated for animals of this size to roam about and stand around on the highways. I know they are beautiful and magnificant animals to look at, but I think that wider open spaces are a safer enviroment for these animals, and especially for humans. White tailed deer are safety hazards enough.

I've seen several in Owsley County. They are beautiful animals. I've also seen two bears. I think it's amazing and awesome the first time you site one of these animals. You need to get out more, Professor!!!! And by the way, where were you today? Trying to find an Elk?:D

I agree they would pose a serious threat ( as deer also do) if introduced to a car but I don't fear them as much as I do a drunk or meth crazed driver.

Remember the wide open spaces that you refer to were once home to the Elk before man decided to invade their privacy. It was their land before it was ours.

 I have that problem as well. While the application deadline has come and gone for this season, there is always next year to look forward to.

You can check out the application process and other info on hunting Elk or any other game in Kentucky by loggng on to http://www.fw.ky.gov

Thanks. It would be a thrill to hunt one whether we got one or not.
