Marshall County Wins State Boy's Golf

Featured Replies

Marshall County wins by one shot over host Bowling Green--595-596!! Congrats to whoever mentioned in an earlier thread that their "upset" over defending champs St. Mary's in the regionals was no fluke.

Marshall's Travis Thompson won the medalist honors over BG's Seth Blann in a four hole playoff--Both finished at even par 144 for the tourney!! If I'm not mistaken Thompson is only a sophmore!!

Marshall obviously has a great team. Congrats to the Marshalls!!!

Even though they have a great team, I would still consider beating Bowling Green on their home course somewhat of an upset.

I talked to a parent of one of the golfers, who knows quite a few of the coaches around the state; and he said Marshall was "the quiet favorite" among those supposedly in the know!!

Interesting. I wonder why they didn't play in any ofthe "Big" tournaments throughout the year?

It's good to see someody different in the winner's circle, that's for sure.

He (and a couple of the coaches) were questioning the same thing regarding tourneys? Maybe they were trying to fly under the radar? He said they apparently had a good team coming into the year and then had a real nice player transfer in from Florida? Looks like it came together for them nicely!!

Would money be an issue for them? Many schools dont participate in the big weekend tourneys b/c of money.

Could be, but I know if my team was this good, I'd find a way to get them entered in every tournament I could!

I don't know if Marshall knew they were going to be this good this year. Obviously, next year they will be invited everywhere.

Thompson sort of came out of nowhere, too. I'm told that they played in a big tournament a few weeks ago and Thompson wasn't in their top five at the time. He really came on late, winning the regional and state titles.

And how about for Region 1 at the state tournament? Two teams in the top seven and six of the top 17 players, three state individual state champions and two of the laast three team titles.

Very solid. There are a lot of good golfers in WKY, that's for sure.

Marshall has everyone back also I believe...Congrats to the Marshall squad!

Congratulations to Marshall Co. and to the KHSAA along with the Bowling Green Country Club. I attended this event and for golf enthusiasts this is an awesome venu for the State High School golf tournament.

The golf course was in great shape. Burmuda fairways lined with very mature trees, and postage stamp greens that appeared to be rolling at about a 12 on the stint meter. The greens were so fast and hard that they were not holding quality approach shots. This put a premium on the short game.

The huge golf trailor with Tiger Woods picture on the side also I thought was pretty cool.

BGCC did a wonderful job hosting this event as well as the KHSAA. There were fans all over the golf course as well as KHSAA Officials. What I noticed was the participants from different teams showing superb sportsmanship and respect for their competetors.

This was my first trip to the State Golf tournament and it will not be my last.

Good chance Marshall County won't be keeping the Boys State Golf Trophy!

I just heard that. Can you fill us in on the real story?

There is a kid on Marshall County's team that MAY be ruled ineligible due to some paperwork that the school did not complete. If this happens, Marshall County drops to 3rd, Bowling Green to 1st and X to 2nd.
