With all due respect to the 37,000 at Papa John's the game of the night in Louisville last night was a short distance away at Manual Stadium.

Alex Matthews is the real deal, 555 yards and 7 TD's was a tremendous performance. I don't envy the Shelby County coaches, you throw for 555 yards, get up on Manual by 21 in the 2nd qtr and the 3rd, Manual has 4 turnovers while Shelby has none and Manual wins.

This was an amazing game, Manual took their first lead with 7:12 remaining in the game, on Rhayven's 1 yd run 49-48. But Matthews answered leading the Rockets on a 6 play 71 yard drive, Otheius Beach scored on a 13 yd pass from Matthews with 5:03 left. The 2pt pass was dropped and Shelby County led 54-49. Manual marches downfield on a Harness to Cooper pass, and 2 runs by DJ Hawk to get to the Shelby Co 36 yardline. Rhayven Smith gets the carry and breaks free to get caught at the Shelby 9, he's dragging 2 guys forward when he fumbles forward and the ball rolls into the endzone and out of bounds for a touchback with 3:43 left.

Shelby County gets a first down on a pass interference penalty, then rush 3 straight plays, the last a 5yd loss on 3rd & 4 when Beach was brought down by Brandon Young and Patrick Warren. Manual used all 3 timeouts on those 3 running plays and after the Rockets punt was downed on the Manual 16 they had 2:17 left in the game and 84 yards to go down 54-49.

Rhayven Smith ran for 11 yards and got out of bounds. Harness completes a 8yd pass to TE Niemann whose knee was down, clock running. 10 yard rush by Rhayven again getting out of bounds. Harness pass for 12 to Andre Wells, tackled just in bounds, clock stops for chains then restarts. Incomplete pass Harness intended for Davidson on sideline. Harness pass complete to Rhayven for 7 yards, and out of bounds. Rhayven carries for 8 yards and out of bounds at the Shelby 28. DJ Hawk rush for 5 yards, clock running. Harness pass incomplete, intended for Gerry Cooper. 3rd and 5, Harness pass incomplete intended for Chantez Bates. 4th & 5 at Shelby 23, Harness connects with Aaron Cosby for 15 yards down to Shelby 8 and first down clock running.

This play I wish I could post a clip of, 1st and goal Manual at Shelby 8, Rhayven Smith carries right side, gets grabbed by the facemask at the 3, tightropes into the endzone, but ruled out at the 2 (wasn't out, clear video) and no call on facemask. Facing 2nd and goal on the 2, 30.9 seconds left Rhayven gets the ball and walks in. Harness connects with Niemann on the 2pt conversion to give Manual the 57-54 lead.

DeParis Jones returns the KO 9 yards and Shelby takes over on the own 16.

Matthews pass incomplete intended for Minnis. 2nd & 10 Matthews drops back then scrambles up his sideline for 17 yards, TO Shelby County, 1st and 10 their own 33 5.5 seconds left. Matthews drops back to pass and Eddie Garruto sacks him, ending the game.

Alex Matthews is posting impressive numbers, but to look the other numbers in the box score. The percent completed was about the same as Manual's Harness. Matthews threw the ball twice as many times to produce the 555. Harness got 268 with 13 throws - seems very comparable to me. Manual had the second dimension, that Shelby Co. could not produce, the run - adding 355 to the total. Looks like Manual had a few miscues with fumbles that Shelby didn't have probably accounting for the close score. Shelby appears to be a one dimensional team, living (and dieing) by the pass. They do it very well and appear to have made it a very exciting game. Too bad they couldn't both win....

Considering the talent, size, and experience Manual has at DL and LB, why weren't the Crimsons getting more pressure on Matthews? Were they just sitting back, not blitzing at all, and allowing Matthews to just pick them apart?

There are two games every year I always wonder about how our players will react. Male, and homecoming. For various reasons you never know if it will be a help or a distraction. I am not giving you an excuse or really answering this question because I was not there, and I don't know, but my impression from those that were there is that Shelby County was very good and that plus our own miscues made our guys miss a lot of what they normally would cover.

Ram, with the strong front that you have at DL and LB, but some weakness in the secondary, I could understand about not being overly aggressive if you were playing a Trinity or Male who have both strong rushing and passing attack potential. Shelby County, however, is a zero threat running the ball. Alex Matthews may very well be the best passer in Kentucky, but it's hard to complete them when you are on the ground, blinded by big hands in your face, or constantly running for your life. Can someone who was actually there please explain what Manual was doing defensively?
