Tomatoes with a little salt.

:ylsuper: :ylsuper: Nothing much better than that.

I really like a home grown "mater'" sammich :thumb: - sliced tomatoes on white bread, salt and pepper and drown in in mayo. ( I like blue plate mayo)

Ummmm Ummm, that is slap your grandma good!!

Fresh Tomatoe off vine and make a BLT sandwich. I love green beans, corn on the cob, cucumber's and most fresh home gound veggies. JD

Tomatoes with a little salt. I'm up to about 3 or 4 a day right now. They give me blisters in my mouth, and my skin breaks out....but it's so worth it. Something to do with the acid according to the doc. Oh well! I'll just continue to torture myself for a few more weeks until they're all gone.

Put a little garlic salt on them and then chill them for 20 minutes in the fridge...It dosn't get much better than that.:thumb:

:thumb: There's nothing better than a ripe tomato right out of the garden. There's no comparison between one just picked from a garden and one bought off a grocery shelf.

I agree, I do not eat store bought tomatoes.

I haven't heard of doing that. I'll try that myself. :thumb:

:thumb: I just can't do it either, the taste of those things are not even close. Don't know what those things are is but it sure ain't a mater !

In Lewisburg, just outside of Maysville, there's a produce auction on Tuesday and Friday nights. Lately, prices have been along the lines of:

Corn (usually Ambrosia, Silver Queen, etc.) - $2.50 to $3.50 per dozen

Tomatoes - $4.00 to $5.00 per 10-pound box; $3.00 or so for 20 pounds or more of canners

Watermelon - $4.00 each

Zuchinni - $2.00 to $3.00 per peck

Bell Peppers - $4.00 for a box of about a dozen big ones

Canteloupes - $1.50 to $2.50 each (several varieties)

Cabbage - 50 cents to $1.50 per head

Green Beans - $7.00 for 10-15 pounds

Grapes - $2.50 per quart

I usually try to make at least once a week. Now that FB season has started, they'll have to get along on the Friday sales without me.

Best bargains of the year - 30 pounds of white potatoes for $4.00; half bushel of peaches for $4.00.

I love fresh veggies.

Some of my faves from the garden are:

(1) Cucumber salad - cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, green peppers, and banana peppers w/ some Italian dressing.

(2) 1/2 Runner green beans - these are the best, a few strings never hurt anybody.

(3) Wilted lettuce - fresh lettuce just cut and washed, chopped up w/ some fresh onion, then add a little hot bacon grease.

(4) Fresh corn on the cob. I love speckled white and yellow sweet corn.

(5) Zuchini bread or deep fried zuchini are both great.

We generally can about 50 quarts of green beans a year, freeze as much corn as we can, can countless quart jars of tomatoe juice, and can about 150 jelly jars of salsa we make ourselves w/ tomatoes, peppers, and onions we grow in our garden.

We also make kraut, some regular, some w/ hot peppers for that little extra burn in the can. And we make salt and bread and butter pickles. I should have bought stock in the Kerr Company that manufactures Mason Jars.

I love and do all of this too. I have a new healthier version of the wilted lettuce. Instead of bacon grease heat up some chicken broth....healither and taste good too.

Just checked my fall garden and it is really looking good. Cucumbers, Zuchinni, Yellow squash, radishes, spinach, leaf lettuce , bib lettuce and mustard greens.Still getting 20-30 tomatoes a day and several peppers.

You know you are always Welcome at our dinner table, but you better get here early.

How early?

But fresh corn on the cob with butter oozing down my chin after a bite is soooo very good.

What do you enjoy fresh out of the garden?

Good corn doesn't need butter or salt. It's like putting A-1 on a Precinct steak.

gotta dissagree with you hear. I love butter and salt on corn, but no sauces on my steak.

I guess to each his own. :p
