August 30, 200719 yr Anything out of the garden tastes soooo much better than store bought. I like corn and speckled butter beans the best.
August 30, 200719 yr Especially, the tommytoes that you can pluck right off the van, plop in the mouth and munch down on like a little snack. :thumb: If they're right of the vine I love eating them like an apple. I hope you meant vine...I've never eaten a tomato plucked from a van. :creepy: :jump:
August 30, 200719 yr Some of my faves from the garden are: (1) Cucumber salad - cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, green peppers, and banana peppers w/ some Italian dressing. (2) 1/2 Runner green beans - these are the best, a few strings never hurt anybody. (3) Wilted lettuce - fresh lettuce just cut and washed, chopped up w/ some fresh onion, then add a little hot bacon grease. (4) Fresh corn on the cob. I love speckled white and yellow sweet corn. (5) Zuchini bread or deep fried zuchini are both great. We generally can about 50 quarts of green beans a year, freeze as much corn as we can, can countless quart jars of tomatoe juice, and can about 150 jelly jars of salsa we make ourselves w/ tomatoes, peppers, and onions we grow in our garden. We also make kraut, some regular, some w/ hot peppers for that little extra burn in the can. And we make salt and bread and butter pickles. I should have bought stock in the Kerr Company that manufactures Mason Jars.
August 30, 200719 yr Tomatoes, onions, and lettuce. Im real picky about my onions. I really prefer red ones but Pearl onions can go with any stirfry IMO.
August 30, 200719 yr Cabbage....Cut it up,fill a quart jar with it,put some white vinegar and pickling salt in,pour hot water to the top and cap..and voila..in a few months you have Kraut! Fried with some ribs and you have a feast fit for a king!!!
August 30, 200719 yr This year we only did tomatoes and peppers. The deer have just about wiped it out. One of our favorites is fried bannana peppers.

August 30, 200719 yr Tomatoes with a little salt. I'm up to about 3 or 4 a day right now. They give me blisters in my mouth, and my skin breaks out....but it's so worth it. Something to do with the acid according to the doc. Oh well! I'll just continue to torture myself for a few more weeks until they're all gone.
