Democrats Strategize on How to Cast the U.S. Troop Surge in Iraq as Failure

"Aware of the trouble Iraqi progress could mean for Democrats at home — House Whip James Clyburn recently said if the surge were successful, it would be "a real problem for us" — a revised set of talking points is being worked up by Democrats that declares the escalation of troops in Iraq has not been successful despite White House claims otherwise."

It figures.... How pitiful it must be to attach yourself to a position where good news for the USA is bad news for your party...where you must secretly hope for bad news in order to get your power back....

Did Hillary slip up? It sure sounds like she says the Surge is working, guess we'll have to wait and see if she sings a different tune.

I watched the movie 13 Days recently and during the whole thing I couldn't help but think, "How would the Cuban Missile Crisis have turned out in today's society?"

With the way the media is, and the way it is used by both Democrats and Republicans to further their own agendas and their political well-being, would Kennedy and his inner circle have been able to take the some course they did. They managed to keep a lot of things out of the press and keep a lot of things quiet to buy them time...could they do it today?

Another example, when the U.S. had a pilot get shot down and Kennedy chose not to respond with an attack, how would that go over today? I could just see the right wing guys blasting him for being weak and unpatriotic and not defending our country, when in reality, what he did may have kept us from a full-scale nuclear war and prevented the United States from suffering a nuclear attack on it's own soil. So, which was ultimately the best for our country?

Obviously, it was a movie so it's probably not 100% true, but I suspect there is much truth in it. It's just really frustrating that everyone in Washington is only concerned with furthering their own political agenda rather than trying to work together for the good of the country.

To carve out a position where American defeat is beneficial to one's party platfom says a lot about where some politician's hearts and priorities truly are.

I recall someone saying, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country."

I don't think he'd recognize nor identify with his party today.

I never knew a whole lot about Kennedy, but after watching that movie, I really gained a lot of respect and admiration for him as a man. Again, I know it's just a movie, but I suspect there was a lot of truth in it. There is no doubt about Kennedy making the call not to retaliate when one of our planes went down. That had to be a really tough decision, but I think he made the right one. I wonder how many "men" in power today could make that same decision...I'm guessing few, if any. And I wonder how many would consider the nation's best interest first, instead of what would make them look better as politicians.

It really brought to light what kind of leadership we have today.

Bluto, that first quote makes it seem like the Dems are almost hoping the troops fail. How anyone could take their stance is beyond me. That's just sickening....

They have been saying we should surrender and leave for a long while. Success in Iraq would be horrible for the Dems...and failing (which they are hoping for in a big way) makes them look good. That in itself tells me all I need to know (and already knew) about the Democrats. I'm sticking with the Let's Win party...

I think we should avoid all future wars. The odds of us winning one with our political strife and media is close to nil.

100% on the money...media shouldn't be allowed in the war zone...half the country cannot stomach the reports...and 3/4 of the media are for failure as well...

If today's media (Rather, Brokaw, Jennings, Couric, etc.) had been overseas during WWII, the "Greatest Generation" would not be viewed that way at all.... :irked:

P.S. I need a "shaking your head in stunned disbelief" smilie.

I'm sorry guys but while I too am upset with some of the above statements I don't think it gives anyone the right to take the next step further and indict all people who might be Democrats or liberals or opponents of the war.

It gets just as old listening to people somehow spin media coverage and all who oppose the war as people who are wanting the US to fail. Sorry guys but those aren't anymore true than the idea that all who support the current war strategy are for death and destruction.

While I agree with your distaste for uniform blanket statements blaming entire groups for the words and actions of a few... it just so happens that these few are the leaders of the democratic party. It is clear that they are attempting to spin any possible good news from Iraq as "...too little too late. The war has already been lost and anybody with any sense would recognize this."

I don't indict all democrats, but I will contend that these democrat leaders are on the wrong side of history. In fact, some of these characters would have been tarred and feathered for similar treasonous statements aiding and abetting the enemy during the Revolutionary War... if not hanged.

Their comments with our troops in harm's way are shameful. Their willingness to declare the war lost and insist that we pull the plug instantly to ensure that loss in their lust for power is beyond disgusting.

Harry Reid in a nutshell.

Absolutely.

Especially pointless wars like Iraq that never had any real chance of success.
