Trinity and St Xavier question?

Featured Replies

Someone mentioned the possibility of T and X getting out of the KHSAA and playing a national schedule.. This was just someones opinion and not something that T and X were contemplating, so, I don't want anyone to think that, but, he brought up some great points and I thought I would bring it up over here and get some opinions from you. If this has already been brought up 100 times, which it may have been, please just ignore it and move on, but, I haven't seen it and would like to hear what others think.

Here were some of the points:

1) These 2 teams have won the championship almost every year, so, what else is there to prove, winning it again.

2) These teams have the largest contingent of boys in the state, have no geographic restrictions and is located in the largest metropolitan area in the state. Wouldn't they be better suited to play teams of equal means and advantage.

3) The cost factor of travel may be an issue, but, wouldn't they still have 5 home games each year and wouldn't some instate teams, like Male, Manual, BGreen, Highlands, Lex Catholic, etc. still schedule them some as well as them playing each other.

4) Would the fanbase travel to places like Nashville, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Cleveland, etc? How did they travel when they played MBA & how many would be going to Cincy St X, this year?

Would fans of these programs be for or against it? Just a question.. I am sure there are positives and negatives either way, but, just curious what everyones spin on it is...

Personally, if I were a supporter of these 2 programs, I would love the thought of it and be alot more excited about the season. As it stands now, it would be embarrasing not to win state unless it was to the other. Can you imagine a schedule like this: MBA, Brentwood Academy, Warren Central, In, Cincy Elder, Cincy St X, each other and then throw in Male, Manual, BGreen and Lex Catholic... WOW!

Interesting topic but I don't see it happening. Cost would be a major factor, not only to the school but for the fans. What do you mean by, "what else is there to prove", it's not like the same players play every year. The new kids have something to prove. This sounds like something a public school person would want. The publics just need to work as hard as the privates if they want the ring. By the way, it is possible, just ask Male.

One question that would have to be answered is what to do with the lower levels. Can't imagine them playing a national schedule(cost). Can't imagine too many Jefferson Co. schools playing them.

If either Trinity or X were to leave the KHSAA then other schools in Kentucky would not be allowed to play them and if I'm not mistaken schools from Indiana and Ohio would not be able to either. The KHSAA will only allow games against other teams that are members of the state association that is recognized by the National Federation and I think the IHSAA and OHSAA also have this rule in place. This is a recent rule change and has precluded games against Oak Hill Academy in basketball.

As it stands now, it would be embarrasing not to win state unless it was to the other.

I don't know what to say about this quote. I think Trinity supporters are always disappointed when they don't win state BUT I strongly doubt any would claim embarrassment unless they were to just play poorly and lose.

Winning the state championship is not an easy task, even for Trinity and X. Trinity and X face attrition due to graduation, and players choosing other activities over football just as every other school. No season is taken for granted.

IMO, in the end, we all play 11 players at a time. Trinity and X do not have the plethora of D-1 talent people assume they do. We have more players, but very few are offered D-1 scholarships, and most don't even play college ball. As to equal means, I don't know what you mean by that, so I'll leave that unanswered for now. As to equal advantage, we play among the largest schools in the state. What advantages do you mean?

If we left the KHSAA, I doubt most schools remaining in the KHSAA would schedule us. It wouldn't be to their advantage to do so. The cost is a huge factor, but the bigger "cost" factor would be lost class time for travel to places like Cleveland, for instance.

We travel very well, and would continue to do so.

Personally, I have 1000% trust in the Board, Dr. Mullen, Coach Lampley, and Coach Beatty to make the right decision for Trinity. Whatever they decide, I know they are making the decision with the best interests of the students and the school in mind first.

It's exciting to imagine, but it's less exciting when you start trying to think of it logistically.

I think 6A will be competitive enough for X and T to keep it exciting and affordable for players families. I know the state championship was somewhat anticlimatic last year for Trinity against Ryle...but it wasn't too long ago that Trinity and Male had the most exciting championship maybe in Kentucky high school football history...X and Bryan Station had an exciting finish a few years ago as well. I personally would prefer to stay in the KHSAA. Not sure if KHSAA would allow X and T to just opt out for football...what would we do for basketball, baseball, soccer, wrestling etc...?

We have to prove ourselves EVERY year. And EVERY year there are capable teams the offer commendable challenges.

2) These teams have the largest contingent of boys in the state, have no geographic restrictions and is located in the largest metropolitan area in the state. Wouldn't they be better suited to play teams of equal means and advantage.

Your statement is misleading at best. True, we don't limit our size (like others choose to). We don't limit our geography (like others choose to), however please be reasonable. No one is going to drive 100 miles to and from school. Any perceived advantage we have has been EARNED over the life of our school. We are not keeping other schools down. They have every opportunity to excel if they want to…

They would not be allowed to play us per All Tell's info.

I imagine they would.

What I find embarrassing is that other schools in the state cannot field better teams to compete with Trinity and St. X more often. We play teams all the time with much better athletes (both playing and hall walkers). Male, Manual, Scott Co., Henry Clay, and Ballard have the best of the best (great facilities, athletes, school, etc). They walk out of the locker room looking like NFL teams. After playing schools like that I often shake my head in wonderment at just how we win against those teams.

To these 2 comments, I'll just say, yes, they do have to prove themselves, but, you can't tell me when you have 1500 or so boys in your school vs some other 6a teams who have 5-600, it's not a distinct advantage. This disparity doesn't happen in any other classification in Ky. and it's alot easier to excel with these #s advantages.. As far as driving the 100 miles, I agree, but, when you're already in the largest metropolitan area in the state, there's no need to. This fact alone, is another advantage, admitted or not.

I wasn't aware of that.. That's why i asked for others opinions..

IMO, I would still be embarrassed if I didn't win it every year.. Everyone made such a big deal about Mercer Co in 2a last year and I would have felt the same about them..

Luckily, you don't have to worry about being embarrassed when we lose nor happy when we win. Probably just angry.

Trinity and St. Xavier would be ill-advised to take the independent route. All of their sports would lose KHSAA sanctioning ... they aren't just football schools. And I suspect the inability to compete for a state title and the disappearance of certain crosstown-intrastate rivalries would cost the schools some players.

^ Funny...

Seriously though, we would love to "regionalize" our football schedule as much as possible. The new 6A format allows for that, being that we will have 7 games non-district to schedule whomever we want (if they want to play us). We are not nearly superior enough in any other sport to think that we can break away from the KHSAA, though many of us would probably like it. We need the KHSAA, and at least fiscally they need us. It isn't a terribly happy marriage, but at the end of the day, at least we are in the same bed :D.

^ not you...the one above you.

This is the underside of any plan to leave the KHSAA. I would never support such a plan (at least not now... but if things get ugly...). But, if it did happen, then there are obvious downsides and this is one of them.

Not happening. Not interested.

Other than expulsion I believe St. Xavier and Trinity no matter how hard they fight changes in the end will succumb to the desires of the KHSAA. After all they are academic institutions first and athletic institutions last. At least I know this is the case at St. Xavier.
