98NCCalum Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 Went camping at the Gorge this past weekend, Fri-Sun. There was a pond near us where we encountered a couple snakes, one was clearly a copperhead (very scary). We stumbled upon the Copperhead accidentally at night, and it was about three feet from me, clearly not happy I was there. But this other one I have no clue what it was. I thought black snake at first, but it's kind of gray, and had some faint rings, any help?
BucksFan Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 creepy. I'm not sure what it is. I use to go to the gorge a lot and we always saw snakes. Not only are there a lot of copperheads in the area but a lot of rattle snakes also. My rule was to stay in the cabin at night. It's one thing to see them and be scared, but to not see them is totally different.
NHS BIG DADDY Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 Man I would have freaked out, Im terrified of snakes.
98NCCalum Posted August 21, 2007 Author Posted August 21, 2007 I actually like snakes. The copperhead creeped me out only b/c we scared it and we were so close. Here's a pic of it...notice the head off the ground eyes fixed on us....it never moved until we did...

We were actually pretty drunk when we (one friend and I) stumbled on the Copperhead, sobered me up real quick.

I wanted too, but we never did.
98NCCalum Posted August 21, 2007 Author Posted August 21, 2007 Cottonmouth?I thought that too, but looked up a picture and it didn't look like it... This is what I saw when I looked up cottonmouth.. http://www.kentuckysnakes.org/snake_details.cfm?snake_number=25&option=common_name It didn't look like that.
UKMustangFan Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 Scary stuff....I hate snakes, especially deadly ones.
Watusi Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 On the first snake, how long was it? Did you see its belly, and if so, what did it look like? It isn't a cottonmouth, and if you encountered one in Red River Gorge it would be way out of its range.

It was definitely larger (fatter too) than the Copperhead, which was about 3.5-4 feet. The belly was the same color, we watched it for a few minutes then it disappeared into the water, so we bolted, not knowing where it would come out.
Watusi Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 That is a huge copperhead. I'm stumped on the first one. Here is a list of all "known" species in KY. I thought it looked like the Earthsnake, but they are tiny compared to that big guy.

He is probably having a field day on the minnows and frogs living in that small pond.

Hmmm, the closest thing I found that was even close was the black snake, but I really don't think it's that.

They never bothered me to bad. I was climbing at one area of the gorge and I was on a ledge and actually came face to face with a rattlesnake. That was a bit nerve wrecking.:creepy:
