That is a huge copperhead.
Yeah, I know. I think my friends exact words were, uhhh Woooahhh Mike, come look at this huge Copperhead, , I thought he was joking, until I was standing right next to him, 3 feet from the thing. (It was a bit tough to see at 2 AM in the woods.

I believe it is just a BIG watersnake. He is probably having a field day on the minnows and frogs living in that small pond.
There were a ton, that's the reason we encountered the Copperhead actually, we were going to see if we could rustle up some frogs to eat.

I used to climb at the RRG about every weekend, I've encountered countless number of copperheads. They never bothered me to bad. I was climbing at one area of the gorge and I was on a ledge and actually came face to face with a rattlesnake. That was a bit nerve wrecking.:creepy:
Jeeez, yeah, I'd imagine. This guy didn't seem to be mad, just made it clear that we should leave his home. So we did!

We met some climbers the next day who were telling us of some guy that got bit by a Copperhead recently and how excruciating the pain was, but that he was fine after finally making it to the hospital.

Saw a girl fall 25 feet at Military Wall on Saturday, she was fine, of course, but it was enough for me to know I'd never try it. :thumb:

I got bit on the knee by a snake, we don't know what kind it was it happened so fast. It didn't feel very good I'll have to say, I had to fang mark scars for the longest time, it was about 6 years ago.

I'd rather encounter a rattler than a copperhead any day. Rattlers will warn you and try to get away. Copperheads will lay still and wait on you to get close enough to strike. They have a much nastier disposition IMO.

Thats what the ropes for:D

Let me get this straight. You saw that snake in the picture and another one that could harm you and you STILL camped?

Had that been me, it would have been the ol "tell me which way you're running, honey, because I don't want to run over you."

I don't think that is a black snake in the first pic....most I have encountered are no way near as thick as that one. I know on our farm I have come across what we call "cow suckers", they get fat as hell but the pigments don't really match.

98, you had to be drunk to get that close to a copperhead.....or have a really good zoom on your camera.:D

No, my friend was there first, froze and called me over, I thought he meant further away. When I got to him it was there, if i bent all the way over and arm extended I could have touched it.

Yeah she was about 80 up when she fell, she had 65 more feet to go, escaped with just a rope burn on the back of the leg.

Could it be a black rat snake?

Of course. We had a big fire both nights, not sure if that keeps them away or not, but it kept alot of bugs away. (Deep Woods Off, is awesome BTW)

But anyway, yeah we still camped, literally, about 50 feet from where they both were.

I thought it was strange they were both in the same area, about 10 feet apart, not at the same time, but the spot we saw them both was about 10 feet apart.

It's kind of weird, we had three girls with us too and no one was really worried about them, looking back now, that is pretty weird,  .

That looks pretty close....Not sure if it had white under the head.

How big do they get, b/c this thing was FAT!

Here is a view of the snake as we found it.

This picture was taken from where we set up our tents, about 40 feet up a hill.

Can you see it?

We went down right to the bank to get the picture I put above, this was the first thing we saw when we looked down on the pond.
