Courier Journal's High School preview

I have said many times before that the C-J Sports section is "not worth lining a bird cage with". What does everybody expect from a sports page that covers golf, horse racing and college basketball YEAR ROUND!?! The same editor has been responsible for the coverage (lack of) for many, many years now. Go to a city like Indianapolis or Cincinnati on any day of the week and look at their sprts page. What a difference!

I find it hard to believe that they are 6 teams in Class 5A that return more talent that Johnson Central this year. I may be a homer but I feel that JC should fit in between the 3 and 5 range.

I think the CJ sports section does a good job actually. The rest of the paper I am not wild about. But the Sports section does have the inherent issue of limited staff for a large area of High school sports. Look Lexington has what? 8 schools it has to cover well, the CJ has 3-4 times that to cover. I too think it is only fair to give all the school a good amount of press but the fact is no school gets covered unless they are doing well and have a following. Fern Creek use to get a ton of press when I played for Manual and teams like Manual, Eastern, Seneca or Valley were only mentioned as if in passing if we played Trinity, St. X, Male or Fern Creek, now Manual gets that 4-5th place share of the spotlight instead of Fern Creek and Trinity, St.X and Male basically have a permanent spotlight on them, that spotlight does as much to feed the beast as anything. But you really can't blame the CJ, the players that the big schools want are playing for what teams? Male, Trinity, St.X, and Manual. And the CJ only has so much space and reporters to cover high school sports. That is why this site is great we can all read about all the teams whereas the paper is limited on space.

I mean winning all those passing leagues means so much when September and October rolls around how could you not pick them!!!!!!!!!!:sssh: :sssh:

Your right TK! Passing league victories mean nothing in the last two weeks of August. They did give a glimpse of where some of the skill players are, althoguh they still need to put it all together with pads on. The victories, I'm sure, were sweet at the time, they now have to get with the the OL and DL to see how they gel as a team......without the passing leagues all the talk on these pages would be based on last years teams and scrimmages.

Yeah cause we Manual fans are really talking a lot of smack about that!!

Passing leagues do mean something when a running team wins it. If X, Manual, Tates Creek, Boone, Ryle etc. wins a passing league, one should take note. The offense may not be as one dimensional in the upcoming year and may serve as a foreshadowing to a better year. We shall see with Manual this year.

They really should get more though. The problem is that the C-J doesn't devote enough manpower to adequately cover the teams in the area. So what happens is the schools with mst interest get all the press. Now comes in the chicken and the egg scenario, maybe if the C-J covered the other teams more thouroghly they would get more interest, but that is another story.

OK. Louisville has 35 schools total (10 of which don't have football), correct? You try covering that many schools adequately with a five-person (or however many writers the CJ sports section has) staff and see if you can keep the coverage fair.

IMO you can't give the same kind of coverage to Shawnee/Moore/DeSales as you do X/Trinity/Male.

I understand the reason perfectly, that doesn't mean the coverage is adequate. They have 1 person covering the High School sports, and some others help out for game days. This is not enough for the amount of teams in the area. I'm not saying any of them do a bad job, but the area is undercovered.

But for the last point, If other teams were covered better they would have more interest in the community. With more interest in football the entire region would improve, not just at the bigger schools.

My point would be that IF they were to cover area sports the way other Sports pages of comparably sized cities would, they could generate more interest in area sports. The more interest would generate more circulation, more circulation would generate more advertising, more advertising would generate more revenue, etc., etc., etc. It is not rocket science, just the fact that it has been a shabby sports page for a long time and until they commit to putting more staff on the payroll, they will continue providing MEDIOCRE coverage in ALOT of areas. A waste of 50 cents and $1.75 on Sundays.

To the point of the thread, I think there has been some point of making it sound like Manual has been thumping their chest over passing league victories. To the contrary, there has been no talk whatsoever about those games. Even though the offense run in passing league is the Wing-T and spread offense run during the regular season (unlike alot of teams that play offenses and defenses you never see them play in the course of the regular season). It will be a tough season (as usual) with games against Central, Christian County, St. Xavier, Male, Henderson County, PRP. If stars are aligned and players stay healthy and the ball bounces the right way, who knows Manual MAY JUST WIN a few games and have a shot at the playoffs!

Oh wait, most every team will get a chance at the playoffs this season. Maybe they can get through the first round and have a shot at a second round team or someone outside of the "meatgrinder".

I was really impressed with the Rams QB last year. I believe after next year you might see a D-1 QB.

Exactly, no Manual people on here have been over playing the passing league sucess. Not that it is not great news, the guys did a great job, but there is a lot of work and football to be played to get a big head.
