Not really, when you consider the BoSox finished 11 1/2 games out of first that year, third in the division. The Angels and Orioles both won their division, and KC was only three games out. Voters in all sport tend to reward players on teams that make the postseason (or come close).

August 9, 200719 yr I've never understood, why Dawson wasn't it. If I recall correctly, he was MVP on a last place team. His offensive stats while impressive, was not his strongest argument. His arm, kept many runners from advancing the extra base and scoring. Dawson and Jim Rice, should be in. I would not mind Kent and Biggio being in, as long as those two are in first. In his last 7 seasons, the highest total of games played were 124. His totals, really decreased the last 3-5 years. What about Sandy Koufax, here is his totals....165-87
August 9, 200719 yr Dawson, Rice, and Murphy.I can't see Murphy making it. If I recall, his K totals are close to his hit totals. You may never see a more professional MLB player but I don't consider him, a HOF. Plus his RBI totals, aren't impressive.

I remember there was a lot of talk a few years ago about whether he'd make it to the hall. Career Stats - .288 avg, 1663 R, 3020 H, 569 HR, 1835 RBI 162 Game Average - 95 R, 173 H, 33 HR, 105 RBI He was a pretty solid fielder as well. Of all the HOF contenders under the steroid cloud (Sosa, McGwire, Bonds, Palmeiro...can't think of any others right off), I think Palmeiro may be the one who suffers the most. His numbers are a notch or two below those guys, and he never did anything really memorable...I think the steroid questions might keep him out. He may be the one who actually pays the price for it. I don't think they'll be able to keep from voting McGwire and Sosa in, so Palmeiro might be the guy who they make their statement on...

There is no "steroid question" with Raffy -- he FAILED a drug test. He'll be made an example of and I'm A-OK with that.

Most observers contend he is at worst the second-best pitcher of his era, behind only Bob Gibson. I can only imagine what kind of numbers he would've thrown up if the medical technology available today would've been around in the '60s. And what was it — five no-nos? That's the real number to look at.
