August 2, 200719 yr It happened at rush hour. It's appears it's going to be a mass casualty situation of the highest magnitude.
August 2, 200719 yr Some forensic engineers are going to have thier hands full with this one. It seems very fishy for a bridge of this magnitude (designed to AASHTO standards of course) to fail without some kind of major trauma.

August 2, 200719 yr This hits a little close to home. I spent about 6 weeks around this time of year back in 2001 working a hail storm in and around the twin cities. I crossed this bridge almost daily.
August 2, 200719 yr This bridge reminds me of the Brent Spence here. They were even doing some resurfacing of the concrete to it recently, just like the Brent Spence. Scary scary scary. How creepy is it seeing cars sitting on all four wheels on the collapsed bridge.

August 2, 200719 yr Very sad news. I'm sure this brings back memories to the folks in W.VA that experienced the Silver Bridge collapse in 1967. 46 were killed and 9 others were injured.
August 2, 200719 yr They just talked to an eye-witness on CNN, and he said he walked under the bridge many times in the past, and the structure never did look very stable. He said he was no engineer, but it never looked right.

I would like to think routine checks are done to check on stability of buildings and bridges and will be interesting to see how this plays out.
