Richard Thompson should be on any list, as should Leo Kottke. Both could fairly be called virtuosos.

 

I like Leo Kottke, but, forgive me if you disagree, I think he has a very similar sound to that of Duane Allman, only acoustic. However, if comparing the two, I don't think he can hold the candle.

Buckethead is def. nasty Cammando! I'd say most people only know of him through guitar hero. My personal favorite guitarist of all time, but one that won't win a lot of accolades is Tom Morello of Rage/Audioslave. VERY Innovative sound.

 

Good to see a fellow Rage fan stick up for one of the more underappreciated guitarists out there. Even if he has been mainstream for some time, he doesn't get mentioned with the greats.

It's great. Don't get me wrong, I respect Kottke a lot. But Duane Allman is such a pioneer, and is also BY FAR the greatest slide player ever, I just don't put the two in the same league.
