How did the Kentucky Colonel's tryout go this weekend? Any surprises?

Not really! Only one or two really jumped out and made you say WOW and if you watch NKy HS baseball, you know who the players are.

Slusher (sp?) from Beechwood, Scully from Holy Cross, and Senator Jim Bunning Grandson from HHS, stood out to me..... Slusher to me at least, looked the best.

The young catcher from Dixie (Popham) I don't think will make the team this year, as his bat just isn't good enough to hit at this level, but give him another year or two and he will.

I was more surprised at who wasn't there... Sainola of CovCath and Shirover of CovCath weren't there and that surprised me.

Remember the following will be back next year....

1. Zac Adans P & Inf

2. Ryan Darner OF & 3rd

3. Cody Elliott P & OF

4. Tyler Holocher Inf

5. Clint Hoskins P & Inf

6. Zach Isler P & Inf

7. Brad Krohman P, 3rd & 1st

8. Luke Maile C, 3rd & OF

9. Matt Nichols P & Inf

10. Bradon Nutini P & OF

11. Rick Parrott Inf

12. Paul Uhl P & Inf

The Colonles bigest need to me at least is outfielders and of course Pitching. You can never have enough pitching.....

Now I am not saying that there weren't good players there, but no one just jumped out at me like Elliott, Maile, Nutini, or Nichlos did last year...... The group of kids as a whole were good, but no one had it all.

I heard from a few people that were there both days that the talent level was excellent from the final group that they will be selecting from. You are correct that they will only be choosing around 10 players because of all the returning players.

Didn't mean to make you think the players were of poor quality at all, just that last years group of kids just struck me as "outstanding". I didn't see a Cody Elliott, a Luke Maile, or a Matt Nichols in this group. Now that doesn't mean they weren't good, but the group of kids that I saw make the team last year, just seemed to me to be a tad better from top to bottom than this years group....

If Mark Reed were still on the team, there would only be about seven spots open as they can only keep twenty from what I understand......

BTW was there both day's......:D :thumb: and for the dinner after the game on Saturday night too.

I want to thank Walt, Denny, and all the Kentucky Colonel Coaches, the parents, and the players for allowing Theoldguy (as an outsider) to hang around such a great organization. If you have a son who loves baseball and is willing to put a lot of hard work into getting better as not only a player, but as a person, then I strongly recommend trying out for the Kentucky Colonels. Great coaches, wonderful parents, outstanding kids, and I am not even talking baseball, but just some great people to know and make friends with. Thanks again for making my summer such a truly wonderful one....

Theoldguy....

Is Maile for sure coming back, I figured that Midland would make a strong puch for him? Is he planning on playing basketball still this year?

I can tell you have enjoyed this summer by previous threads and you are a great fan. I am sure you know baseball but you are also emotionally attached to this last group. When a kid is an incoming Junior it is hard to tell from one tryout how good he may become, especially when they haven't even completed their Junior season. Just my opinion...

There may be more open spots than you are anticipating. I notice that at least a couple of these boys will be attending college this next year. Even though they may still be eligilble according to their birthday, Walt ususally likes to see these boys play in a college summer league rather than come back and play against younger competition.

What I was led to believe is that a young man in a four year college playing baseball on a scholarship is indeed steered toward playing in a college summer league, but young men who are of the correct age playing for a two year college (JC) or not playing College ball can play. Just what I was led to believe....but the information I received wasn't from Walt or a coach of the Colonels......

Players who tried out for the Colonels will be receiving a phone call from Walt, or Denny by Wednesday. Again good luck to all of you......

After talking to a couple parents and players, it seems the Colonels will welcome EJ Murray (Scott) and Thomas Towles (Highlands) to the team.

Congrats to these players, well deserved!

Some players progress each and every year and some reach their peak early.

Many of the players that aren't invited to play for the Colonels will have

good opportunities with other teams that may even be a better "fit" for a particular player. In high school ball, some tryouts last a week to two weeks when the time devoted to pitchers and catchers is counted. But, there is only so much time to evaluate players on a hot afternoon.

Players who played for the other Northern Kentucky 18U teams have opportunities to play in college and many were "cut" by the Colonels. Things seem to always have a way of working out for a determined player.

The Bluegrass Knights ( Lions ) will be holding tryouts over the weekend Aug .18 at Beechwood HS .This will be a 16 and under team next year coached by Bob Myerhoff (former Erlanger Lions ) .I know Saturday will be at 10:oo AM .More details will follow .

If the Erlanger Lions are now going to be the Bluegrass Knights, are the coaches who use to coach Bluegrass going to assist? or will they have another team?

It will be coached by all of them .The Knights coaches ( or at least 1 of them will be invloved .I think the team will be called Bluegrass Lions

Congrats to EJ Murray and Thomas Towles. I know who EJ is, but is Towles the Grandson of Senator Bunning?

yes old guy that is who Towles is. He has a lot of potential. Did well for the Bluegrass organization this year and it is unfortunate he will be most likely joining the colonels and leaving bluegrass. But you gotta do what you gotta do and I know Bluegrass wishes him well.
