So, is Eastern Kentucky one of the highest poverty rate regions or not? Last I checked it was. Wouldn't it be nice if a candidate offered a solution to the end of that problem? There are educated poverty stricken citizens as well, you know.

 

Last I checked there were awful slums, poverty, and homeless people in Louisville, not to mention a crime rate many times that of Eastern Kentucky...How are those problems being dealt with? Maybe we can learn something from you all...

While pockets of poverty can be found anywhere, the kind of profound poverty found in some parts of Eastern Kentucky is unequaled in this or many other countries. That's not in any way a shot at the region, it's just a simple fact.

Your LOL indicates that perhaps you're not aware of the economic realities in the area. My statement was one of fact.

 

There is poverty all over; but, again, nothing even coming close to what is found ion the poorest areas of Eastern Kentucky. I'm very glad that you personally, do not live in one of these areas; but that doesn't mean they don't exist. These areas of deep, long-standing poverty need attention, and help.

This is a very sensitive subject to me and a stereotype, that is often undeserved by many in Eastern KY. Without question, EKY is poor in many areas, as is NY, California, LA, Mississippi, Texas, etc....areas of poverty abound.

 

What is the reason, many like cost of living isn't balanced. Educational opportunities, that weren't pursued or affordable. Job availability, for more white collar work and less, for non-skilled factory, industrial and office settings. Some are lazy, content to be on welfare and others, work 2-3 jobs, just to get by.

 

Population itself, will increase job opportunities, which in turn generates dollars throughout areas, which EKY doesn't have. The average age, I'm assuming is older in many EKY communities. Low income housing, like trailers, complexes and homelessness, abound in EKY and large cities.

 

The dialect or the way we speak, makes others assume we're not educated. I know many with educations, who have a southern slang, while others, who can't read, than sound as normal as anyone.

 

Poverty is not limited to a state, region or area but the stigma, is often constant from news, media and others. The hills and mountains, translate to no shoes, no running water and can't read to some, while to those of us who call the beautiful scenery home, it's normal. The opportunity, must be seized by the citizens in an area, before any change can occur. Most aren't looking for handouts, but rather a means to help improve the quality of life.

 

Don't judge those who sound different, look different, dress different as less, but embrace their culture, communities and help to improve their standard of living, either in the country or covered by the smog of a city.

 

Hopefully, the Presidential candidates will look to help all Americans first, before sending revenue, across our borders....There is many, who need help in every city, in every state. I applaud Edwards, as he can increase awareness and help others, like most politicians should do anyway.

OK, just saw the first sound bites on the news. Same ol' stuff, raise the minimum wage, better health care. Necessary and raises the standard of living somewhat, but doesn't provide the opportunities needed to rise above the poverty level.

There is government money wasted every where. I said a town with nothing in it no houses , no stores a bank and a museum is it really worth multi million $$$$ to protect that Just move the things that are there. Poor people and shacks are ever where, downtown Lexington, Cinni, Lou., and there are money people and very nice houses. There are nice and dirty and poor and rich where ever we may be. Not just EKY.

I believe the stat I read is that the median family income for EKY is $25k while the average worker earns $12k. I can't imagine another part of the state with those numbers.

 

Everyone will concede that the Commonwealth has poor folks throughout its boundaries but EKY, as a whole, leads the way unfortunately.

Is there anyone that believes that this is anything other than a publicity stunt? He will come in, tell what his plans are to help the area and all of Appalachia - then climb aboard his private plane, laugh at the people that he just made promises to and say how "good" he sounded :irked: Yada......Yada.......Yada....

 

 

That is my take on pretty boy's visit. If the guy above that mentioned a haircut - I might consider watching a good ol' country barber give him a haircut :lol: . If not, I will boycott the local news tommorrow.

I can understand what you are saying and all. I also would love to see anyone, no matter what their party do more to help the poor. JMO but the way that politicians are working today (both parties) I question any of their sincerity to the places that they are there. Imo ones that visit a predominatley African American community are after that groups vote, nothing more. Same with any group of people. Like I have said before, the sure way to tell if they (politicians) are lying is to watch and see if their mouth's move when they talk .

Don't believe everything you read. $12k isn't minimum wage. Everyone I know makes a lot more than that, and I can honestly say I don't know a single person who makes only $12k...

I'll assume the figure quoted includes all workers - not just full-time.

12k for a full time employee figures out to $6.00 per hour. Current minimum wage is $5.85. Surely you know someone working at McDonalds or the local convenience store making 12k or less.
