Buying American

Featured Replies

Has anyone ever went to a Walmart with the intentions of buying only American made products? I went Saturday to buy my son and some of his friends flashlights for a camp-out he was having and this was pretty hard to do. They had one brand of flashlight that was made in the USA and it was the cheapest looking one also. I hope they will last over night. Everything is made in China, no wonder their economy is booming.

I refuse to shop at Wal-Mart, haven't been to one in over 3 years.

I've been in one everyone once in a while but I haven't bought anything from them in about 2 years.

This thread could quickly fall into the politics discussion.

Living in Maysville, there really isn't a lot of other options when it comes to certain things.

Sure you could go to Kroger and you could probably find a mom/pop place to buy other things, BUT there really isn't a lot of options.

If I lived in a larger city again, I can't say I would avoid Wal-Mart like the plague, but I certainly wouldn't be there as much.

Many of us could have a field day with all the negatives at Wal-Mart as opposed to the positives.

My biggest problem with Wal-Mart is that they don't carry music with parental advisory stickers and the only way you know you are getting a "censored" copy is a VERY tiny little "edit" typed on the barcode. That bothers me more than anything else.

So, is this thread about Walmart or China?

Chinese people IN WalMart:dancingpa

Its not about Walmart In general, or maybe it is. Walmart is the only store in my area and if they are the cheapest because everything they buy is from China I have aproblem with that. Or at least have a selection of products made in the USA so those of us who choose to by american can.

I'd like to buy American as much as possible, but the combination of manufacturers leaving the US for cheaper labor and the fact that a lot of American-made products aren't made well makes it hard to justify using "buy American" as a legit rallying cry.

Example: Two days ago I bought a dolly to help move boxes out of my old apartment. On the second trip down the steps, the plastic (!) wheel broke and the tire slipped its mount, forcing me to have to make a mid-step repair. American made.

I buy from who ever has the best product at the best price. If American companies want people to buy American then they need to build better products at better prices.

I have zero problem shopping at Wal-Mart.

Even some of the "Made in the USA" items were only assembled or partially manufactured in the USA. They're still getting lots of parts from overseas.

Isn't that technically false advertising? I remember when the facts you mention first came to light about a decade ago, and people would look at you like you had an eye in the center of your head when you would try to explain that products "made in the USA" actually weren't.

I thought those usually say "Assembled in the USA"...

You are correct. I'm wrong.

What is the standard for a product to be called Made in USA without qualification? For a product to be called Made in USA, or claimed to be of domestic origin without qualifications or limits on the claim, the product must be "all or virtually all" made in the U.S. The term "United States," as referred to in the Enforcement Policy Statement, includes the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories and possessions.

What does "all or virtually all" mean?

"All or virtually all" means that all significant parts and processing that go into the product must be of U.S. origin. That is, the product should contain no — or negligible — foreign content.
