Elizabeth Edwards: "Please Stop Personal Attacks"; Coulter: Laughs

I must confess that I often listen to Limbaugh, but today is not one of those days. I'm not a completely mind-numbed robot...

You missed my point entirely. The research revealed that we listen more closely to what we find offensive than to what we like. Your comments seem to validate this conclusion.:thumb:

I stand corrected - I missed the word "not" (between "do" and "enjoy").

I have really only sat and listened to Coulter a hand full of times. This is my observation of her...

- She looks like a "ho"

- She dresses some what like a "ho"

- She trys to sound intelligent and comes off as a jealous dumb blonde

- It is shocking to me that she's actually a lawyer

Here's what Maher said:

"I have zero doubt that if Dick Cheney was not in power, people wouldn't be dying needlessly tomorrow."

Later, he said:

"If he did die, other people would live. That's a fact."

Gotta say that I agree with everything said THERE.

In an interview with O'Reilly, Maher also says that he thinks it would be wrong and in no way advocates killing Dick Cheney. O'Reilly agrees with him that people deliberatly misquoted Maher and twisted his intent.

Compare that to ''If I'm going to say anything about John Edwards in the future, I'll just wish he had been killed in a terrorist assassination plot."

Essentially the same remarks? To paraphrase a great man: "Aint no ballpark neither. Not even the same game."

Here's where I see the similarities:

Maher: What about the people who got onto the Huffington Post – and these weren’t even the bloggers, these were just the comments section – who said they, they expressed regret that the attack on Dick Cheney failed.

Joe Scarborough: Right.

Maher: Now…

John Ridley: More than regret.

Maher: Well, what did they say?

Ridley: They said "We wish he would die.” I mean, it was hate language.

Barney Frank: They said the bomb was wasted. (laughter and applause)

Maher: That’s a funny joke.

Funny?

I haven't seen a clip of that section, of that being said.

It could be taken one of two ways. Either he was responding to that as if that's what the commentators on the blog said (which wouldn't be funny) or he could be responding to Barney Frank saying that as a joke... which is funny.

In any case, Coulter made the joke about Edwards. You can't say what she called him here, which is regrettable because it's a powerful word and I think everyone should see in black and white what she said. When she was asked about it, she seized this shield of Maher's comments, which were ready-made by people at Fox and elsewhere (she wasn't even original about it) instead of having to come to terms with the fact that she called John Edwards a ...

You want to talk about playing into her hands, it's the people that defend her in the same manner.

Either way it's not funny and highly inappropriate. Franks was quoting the bloggers.

Like I said, I haven't seen that section. If it were the other way, I disagree that it's not funny because it's a riff on the bloggers and the state of politics. "See, look how much these people hate Cheney" becomes part of the texture of the joke. I'd have to see it.

And because I don't want it to get buried on the last page:

You cannot find a post in nearly 7000 in which I have defended Coulter on this topic. I was merely casting light upon her tactics, which like them or not, are very effective.

Respectfully, I disagree.

I don't get how you conclude that I am defending Coulter. For the record, I too feel she is too abrasive much of the time. On the other hand, I think the liberal and fair thing to do is to put her remarks in context. Taken in context, she was not assaulting Edwards. She was making a very clear comment on how liberals like Maher are able to launch the most inflammatory statements with little or no repercussions while conservatives like her are assaulted for lesser comments.

How is it that Maher and Moore have greater license under the guise of Freedom of Speech, while Coulter is taken to task for the same comments?

Is freedom conditional?

I would construe these comments as defending Coulter.

I also absolutely disagree with them. Taken in context, she was assaulting Edwards with her use of a highly pungent slur for a homosexual. Anything she said later was the use of Bill Maher's comments (TRULY taken out of context where he was talking about free speech and making some jokes, even the "Biggest show on Prime Time" for the "Worlds Most Trusted Source for Fair and Balanced News" agrees there) to deflect attention away from the real issue, where she called John Edwards ... what she called him.

Construe them as you will. The fact is, I have not once said that Ann Coulter was right to handle this the way she did. I personally feel she is over the top much of the time. She makes comments I would never think to word the same way myself. I have merely pointed out the tactics she uses to cause others to look more closely at an issue. In this sense, she is absolutely brilliant, because we do. We’re doing it right now.

I have read and listened to Coulter as well as Maher as well as Rush as well as Franken etc., etc. I get it. I understand where they are coming from. Just as I think it is foolish to distill the entire Bible down to one passage, I feel the same way about painting a picture of a person’s entire purpose and meaning by a randomly selected statement or two… especially those intended to rankle those set in their beliefs and cause them to think more deeply about how they apply their beliefs.

I find it completely hysterical that you and others cannot bring yourselves to condemn the words of Bill Maher stating plainly that it’s too bad the VP wasn’t killed by a bomb intended for him, because if he had been killed, others might be alive today. Maher makes it sound like Cheney is the sole reason the war is happening. This is so absurd and lacking in reason it’s not even worth dissecting.

Bottom line, there is a distinct bias in the media, and Coulter’s comments reveal this whether you care to see it, or are able to see it, or not.

Maybe I should defend her after all… :thumb:

Who knows, maybe Liz was planning to raise money all along:

In an e-mail to supporters, Edwards’ wife Elizabeth described why she called in to MSNBC’s “Hardball” Tuesday. The show featured the conservative pundit, who has often attacked Edwards.

This week Coulter proclaimed “If I’m going to say anything about John Edwards in the future, I'll just wish he had been killed in a terrorist assassination plot.”

Elizabeth Edwards said she decided to call the show to appeal to Coulter to stop the attacks.

“I told her these kinds of personal attacks lower our political dialogue at precisely the time when we need to raise it, and set a bad example for our children,” she said. “How did she respond? Sadly, perhaps predictably, with more personal attacks.”

The e-mail is coupled with an appeal for campaign donations.

“Please give what you can right now to help raise the dialogue and show that Ann Coulter-style politics will never carry the day,” Mrs. Edwards wrote.

Coincidence? Hmmmm. Is Edwards still lagging in money?
