Elizabeth Edwards: "Please Stop Personal Attacks"; Coulter: Laughs

You have officially boggled my mind, as well as revealing blind bias on your part.

In the first post of this thread you started, you quoted an AP article upon which you based your protests against Coulter. That very article included this excerpt…

''If I'm going to say anything about John Edwards in the future, I'll just wish he had been killed in a terrorist assassination plot,'' Coulter said Monday, picking up on remarks made by HBO's Bill Maher. Maher suggested in March that ''people wouldn't be dying needlessly'' if Vice President Dick Cheney had been killed in an insurgent attack in Afghanistan.

I used your own source as the basis of my comments.

How is it you can quote and take as gospel certain comments and completely disregard others in the very same article?

You said, “If I hear it for myself I'll judge what was said, but I don't like just regurgitating what someone says that someone said to be outraged.” And yet, that is exactly what you are doing against Coulter while ignoring the clear connection to Maher.

1) IMO, Coulter's comments were a DEFLECTION, not a protest. She doesn't care, really, what Maher says or what people think of him. It was just an easy way to answer the question on her slur of Edwards.

2) The difference is, I have heard for myself Coulter's comments. I have not heard Mahers. One of the reasons for that, of course, is that Coulter is working the talk show circuit at the moment, and Maher is not. I don't think it reflects media bias that people are talking about Coulter and not Maher... the fact is, people are hearing about Coulter and not Maher because she's putting herself out there.

I'm not going to defend Coulter, she does a fine job of that on her own, but it cracks me up how people take her remarks out of context in order to villify her.

Her comments on Edwards were made following Maher's offensive remarks wishing that Dick Cheney had died in a terrorist attack.

Her point was that instead of other (mild by comparison) remarks she has made about Edwards, she should simply wish (as Maher did about Cheney with no repercussions) that he was killed in a terrorist plot... which, based upon the lack of outcry toward Maher means that such comments are somehow more acceptable.

Her commentary was to illustrate the bias in the media toward liberal speakers and thinking ala Maher. The focus of her comments were directed at Maher more than Edwards.

The fact that you have posted this in outrage over Coulter's comments, without first expressing equal outrage over Maher's original assault on the Vice-president of this nation proves her point.

Like it or not, you have played right into her hands...

:thumb: Excellent..

IMO, Coulter was ambushed by Matthews by bringing Edward's wife on the show to sling accusations. Under the circumstances, I think Coulter's retort, albeit caustic, was entirely apropos.

If John Edwards was upset by Coulter's comments, why didn't he have the cojones to appear himself instead of giving the appearance that he's hiding behind his wife's skirt? Not exactly Presidentially inspiring IMO. The reason of course is that Edward's wife can been viewed as a sympathetic victim of the mean old republican witch, when the truth of the matter is, Hardball is only hardball toward conservative thought. Liberals are lobbed softballs.

As far as you hearing Coulter's comments and not Maher's it has been proven that we (humans) actually listen more closely to music and lyrics we do not enjoy, than we do the the words and music we like. Could it be that something similar occurs when you hear Coulter and Maher?

Puhleaze, Matthews is maddeningly inconsistant in both directions.

And, once again, I HAVEN'T HEARD Maher's comments. Not like, someone played them and I wasn't really paying attention- the sound has not jangled in my ear.

No doubt, but to deny that Matthews is a flaming liberal in his own views is simply ignoring the obvious.

You're also getting the timeline wrong. Coulter made the comments about wishing Edwards would be assassinated on Good Morning America. She wasn't ambushed and shocked into those comments. She had them waiting. She couldn't wait to say it.

I understand what Coulter was trying to get across this week so I don't have a problem with that particular comment. However, Elizabeth Edwards is correct in saying that the personal attacks have to stop and Coulter's remarks a while back about Edwards were definetly over the top personal attacks. 02Ram is correct that she was trying to deflect answering the question about her original remarks. She has a problem knowing when sarcasm crosses the line.

And, once again, I HAVEN'T HEARD Maher's comments. Not like, someone played them and I wasn't really paying attention- the sound has not jangled in my ear.
How then can you state with such certainty, "I disagree with the representation of her remarks. They weren't made in response to Maher." ?

Because I heard hers. I saw the same deflection 75center did.

I think Mrs. Edwards put Coulter in her place. She was nervous, hiding behind her sunglasses and flipping that mane around. I disagree that she was trying to make any kind of meaningful point. She is just trying to gain attention, most likely to sell another book.

I think making light of anyone's death, in this case a child's death, is inexcusable. Coulter should have taken the high road for once and made some effort to apologize about her remarks regarding the Edwards' son that passed away.

^^I heard them both. You saw what you wanted to see..

I don't get how you conclude that I am defending Coulter. For the record, I too feel she is too abrasive much of the time. On the other hand, I think the liberal and fair thing to do is to put her remarks in context. Taken in context, she was not assaulting Edwards. She was making a very clear comment on how liberals like Maher are able to launch the most inflammatory statements with little or no repercussions while conservatives like her are assaulted for lesser comments.

How is it that Maher and Moore have greater license under the guise of Freedom of Speech, while Coulter is taken to task for the same comments?

Is freedom conditional?

I don't feel any of the individuals you mention, nor any other person who isn't mentioned should have the right to use their fame to make such evil, vile and completely repugnant remarks.

You are defending her by trying to deflect the issue from her to others. It doesn't matter what anyone else has said. And I mean that reciprocally. I'm tired of hearing "She said.....but she was only responding to what.....said". This is crap! We all want to talk about morals and ethics! How can anyone say this woman's remark, whether as a rebuttal or unprovoked, is ethical, moral, or in any way Christian?

Please! Don't give me the crap about right, wrong, he-said, she-said. Her remark was wrong. Her claim to fame is her vileness, and this is the crap that needs to stop if we ever want to solve any of our issues in this country. Quit trying to one-up each other and put that energy to good use.

Where is your ire for Maher???

Where is your ire for Maher???

Right here:

It's a blanket statement, applicable to all the individuals who make their living slinging crap around about "the other side".
