June 15, 200719 yr "About three (NBA jobs), I thought, ‘Hey, this is it,' " Smith said on the show. "Much like Billy Donovan, you’re emotionally attached to a job, but you go in there, and in fact, I did what Billy did. I took one job. I actually took two jobs, and then decided, ‘Hey.' " Asked how such a story never became public, Smith was noncommittal, indicating that "you don’t do it, it’s people that are working with you; it’s your agent or someone." http://frontier.cincinnati.com/blogs/ncaa/2007/06/tubby-and-nba.asp#links
June 15, 200719 yr It's all the agents doing...what they get paid to do. I still think you need some trigger from the boss to say go ahead and get it done. I also believe that Tubby was thisclose to taking the South Carolina job. I would venture to say the 76'ers was one NBA team as well and possibly the Charlotte Hornets/Bobcats. Despite others saying that Donovan had no deal with UK and so on, and not looking to get into a spitting match all over again, but BD's agent worked a deal with UK. Petrino's agent was fishing for better jobs when Bobby P was at UL, see the Falcons job, and others...his agent tried to get him in the door with LSU to no avail, and Bobby P jumped ahead of the cart with the Auburn situation. Agents get more jack when they can get their guy mucho money. I wonder how BD's agent is feeling, money wise with BD walking away from over 5 mil with the Magic.

June 15, 200719 yr Not the reaction you were hoping for huh GT?? Of course it has only been 1 hour & 16 minutes.
June 15, 200719 yr I may be making this up, but didn't Tubby's name always come up when there was mention of the Atlanta Hawks searching for a coach???
June 15, 200719 yr It may have, regarding the Hawks...but in my opinion I think he was really close to going to South Carolina. He and Larry Ivy did not get along whatsoever, and Ivy was always hoping in some fashion to bring Pitino back to UK. Ivy refused to pay assistant coaches a decent comparable salary to other schools, that is the reason Tubby lost his best assistant coach he ever had at UK in George Felton. With all of the issues he and Ivy had, OTS about ran off to South Carolina...I think the only other real thing that occurred to stop that was President Lee Todd intervening in some fashion.

June 16, 200719 yr By South Carolina, you are meaning the University of South Carolina, right? Because there is no NBA franchise in the state.

June 16, 200719 yr All the Tubby Supporters/Billy Basher staying silent on this one.... Saint Tubby isn't so saintly IMHO..........
June 16, 200719 yr I miss the Tubby lovers too. Just wish he had left sooner. Then we could have had a better recruiting class probably last year and this coming year. Did he also say in there we played in the sweet 16 past two years someone told me that?
June 16, 200719 yr All the Tubby Supporters/Billy Basher staying silent on this one.... Saint Tubby isn't so saintly IMHO.......... We are still here (supporters) and the Tubby Bashers are still going at it only just not as much . I am still a Tubby supporter but I am first and foremost a U.K. supporter so I tend not to dwell in the past like some want to. :thumb: .

Did he also say in there we played in the sweet 16 past two years someone told me that? Billy Gillispie hasn't won one game yet. Yes he probably will win more than a few in his reign and I hope that he does, but as soon as he loses a few and has a bad stretch (and he will, any team does), the Tubby bashers will regroup and rename themselves Billy Bashers. You see, only the name changes and the bashing continues on and on and on and on............. (it is just like the energizer bunny only I call it te energizer bashers ) . .
