May 28, 200719 yr Liberal or Conservative....What does God tell us through scripture? "Love thy neighbor as thyself." "Judge not lest ye be judged." "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherith the Earth."
May 28, 200719 yr Author "Love thy neighbor as thyself." "Judge not lest ye be judged." "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherith the Earth." Amen Sister!
May 28, 200719 yr Author When a liberal sees problem they say "We need to do something" and by "We" they mean the government. When a conservative sees a problem they say "We need to do something that works". By adding the phrase "that works" it usually eliminates the government as being the solution and so the "We" is "you" and "I" activing as private citizens. Can you give any examples?
May 29, 200719 yr RockMom...What if my neighbor is a vol fan? Jesus didn't say it would be easy. In fact, I don't know the passage, but isn't there something about taking the higher road, or loving the sinner, but hating the sin, or something like that?
May 29, 200719 yr I can live with that reasoning, but I disagree. I am 40 now and WAAAAY more liberal than I was at 18. It was the shift in my religious beliefs that moved me that way. And I respect you and your beliefs because of that. Like I said, a lot of folks accept and believe in the liberal philosophy because they are very compassionate caring people. Unfortunately, I do believe that you can love and care for a person to a fault. I've seen many parents spoil their kids because they love them too much. At times, although it hurts, sometimes parents have to do the tough thing even though it breaks their heart. Society is in many ways the same. Take minimum wage for example: the concept of every person making a "liveable wage" sounds great and is very caring. But, the costs of doing so would harm many businesses and thus harm many more people. Plus it removes the incentive of working harder to gain greater responsibilities to earn even higher wages. Welfare is another example. In theory its wonderful and very caring. But it can be counter productive to society and our capitalistic system. At the end of the day, I totally "get" where you and other believers in the liberal agenda come from. I really do. But I'm more of a tough love kind of person. It doesn't mean that I care any less about people; quite the contrary. At the end of the day, liberals and conservatives both really want the same thing. Its just a difference in philosophy as to what policies enable people to meet their maximum potential and for our country to remain economically strong for the next hundred years. History is full of examples where great countries became weak when they adopted policies that allowed their people to become weak and lazy. And most of those policies were adopted with the best of intentions. I've just finished several books on ancient Greek history and what happened to Athens, I believe can happen to the U.S. Liberals, or at least one of the more outspoken ones, believe it takes a village to raise a child. I don't. I believe that it takes loving parents and that if we tell parents that they don't have to care for their children because the village will do it for them, it lessens the need for caring parents and disincentivizes a portion of our society to fulfill their parental responsibilities. Which in the long run is more harmful to the children and our society. I don't believe that teachers should have to teach our children values like respect, commitment and discipline (or sex education for that matter). That is the parents job to do. But if the parents realize that the teachers will do it for them, they are less inclined to do it themselves, which is a mistake. Welfare in another example of good intentions doing bad things. Back in the day before we had govt safety nets, the family was the safety net. If you lost your job and could not make it on your own, you called on your family to help you and your family survive until you could make it on your own. Such promoted family commitment and bonds. Further, because you realized that you were asking your family to make sacrifices to carry you, you were motivated to move as fast as possible to get back on your feet. With the current system, I don't think that is the case. I've actually known people who were let go of their jobs, intentionally drag their feet before they got new jobs. Their rationale: "I'm going to take some time off and relax and draw unemployment. Heck, I've paid into the system for years and now I'm going to get some back". That in my opinion, is terribly, terribly wrong. Its what is wrong in my opinion with the whole welfare system. The change in mentality toward welfare is most evident in the fact we now call them "entitlements". Entitlements my foot. The only thing I believe we are entitled to in our lives, is the freedom to provide for ourselves and our families in this wonderful country. I'm finished. Sorry for the ramble. I could go on and on forever. Again, at the end of the day, I respect your support of the liberal agenda because I believe it is based on caring and love for your fellow mankind. I hope that you likewise understand that my belief in the conservative agenda is based on the same concerns. We just disagree how that can best be accomplished.
May 29, 200719 yr Well, he's successful, so I feel pretty darned good about what I said! Depends on how you define successful. I would not include him in my definition of successful. To me, guru and those who helped developed BGP is more successful because they developed something that is a POSITIVE to our culture.
May 29, 200719 yr "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherith the Earth." Isn't it interesting here that the meek shall inherit the Earth. When? Doesn't say anything directly about eternal salvation.

One of your best post, that I have read. You displayed a non-abrasive attitude while explaining your (and my) stance on several issues, I commend you for that, I personally have trouble doing that sometimes.
May 29, 200719 yr Leather...great insight. RockMom, not sure of the direct passage, but it is written that we are loved even as we sin. God hates sin, but loves us the sinner. I'll keep looking.
May 29, 200719 yr Great explanation. One of your best post, that I have read. You displayed a non-abrasive attitude while explaining your (and my) stance on several issues, I commend you for that, I personally have trouble doing that sometimes. Thanks. I know that I've oversimplified the couple of issues that I discussed. But generally, that's how I feel about them. It would take up pages on here to really dig into my thoughts and opinions on the issues and I'd again be wearing the label of the "Great Pontificator". If we could stop all the name calling; realize that people of both parties both really want the same thing;and agree to try to work together to resolve our differences of philosophy (where possible), this country would become even stronger than it is. Unfortunately politicians of both parties have something to gain by belittling the folks on the other side, and that something is getting re-elected. We as citizens have to be smarter than getting caught up in that silliness and do what we can to influence our elected officials to work together.
May 29, 200719 yr Leather...great insight. RockMom, not sure of the direct passage, but it is written that we are loved even as we sin. God hates sin, but loves us the sinner. I'll keep looking. Hate the sin, and love the sinner, is a common saying, but is not found in scripture. There are some passages that imply this phrase and it is good to live by, but it is not scripture. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. —Romans 5:8, NIV
