May 25, 200719 yr What is the one political belief, tenet, idea, ideal, paradigm, whatever that makes being liberal a bad thing? 1. Believing that the Earth God provided us is more important than the almighty dollar?*** 2. Believing that those in need (even if they don't deserve it) should be helped by the established government?*** 3. That people frequenting a government supported establishment/organization, etc (school, courtroom, legislative room) should be able to do so without a particular religion thrust upon them by the same government that compels them to frequent the establishment?*** 4. That morality cannot be legislated (successfully - see prohibition) but that it could/should be taught in the homes and churches and then practiced by everyone?*** 5. That peace is always the better alternative to war? The we should, as God instructed, Love our enemies and bless those that persecute us?*** 6. That what someone does in the privacy of their bedroom between two consenting adults is no business of the government? 7. That the government should not prohibit two adults from entering into a binding contract that does not promote illegal activity thereby limiting the parties from reaping the benefits of said contract? 8. That medical treatment should be derived after conversations with the doctor, patient and when appropriate the family and that the government should have no say in those procedures? 9. That the working people, of the richest country in the world, should be paid a living wage?*** 10. That all people should have access to quality, affordable, health care?*** 11. That the commandment to not murder extends to the death penalty?*** ***are items I also believe to be the teachings of Jesus. Why do these beliefs make someone evil?? (caveat - the abortion question is the only one where I can understand the difference in that those who are pro-life, believe that abortion is the taking of the life of another human. I respect that belief and I disagree - at this point in my life. Science may later change my mind.) All of these, with the exception of the one, actually work to help people live better lives. I just can't see what is so bad about them?
May 25, 200719 yr I agree with your comment on the one point where you see the negativity where liberal is attached.
May 25, 200719 yr Author I agree with your comment on the one point where you see the negativity where liberal is attached. Not all liberals, but that is why I put the caveat in there. What is wrong with the rest of the ideas?
May 25, 200719 yr Not all liberals, but that is why I put the caveat in there. What is wrong with the rest of the ideas? You contradicted yourself in #5 with #3. #1 is fine #2 is excellent #4 whose version of morality? #6 goes back to my question in #4 #7 goes back to my question in #4 and doesn't this contradict with #9 #8 so my tax dollars should be used for abortions? #9 please explain more #10 in theory sounds great, does that mean I can be lazy and you will provide for all my needs? #11 I wouldn't have a problem with that but can also see Scriptures that indicates that it is acceptable as Jesus accepted the death penalty for the thief he indicated was saved.
May 25, 200719 yr Being a Democrat (I use Democrat here instead of liberal because I believe that is what acemona means and I think "liberal" is ambiguous) isn't a bad thing, but I disagree with the general tenets of Democrat beliefes. The government is obviously set up to help it's citizens, but I don't believe government controlled wages, prices, resources, industries or any other part of the economy is going to help anything. It may sound lovely on paper, but I personally believe that the greater good is served, economically, through a free market system. I don't believe the government can run the economy effectively but should be used as a regulator, or an arbiter, to ensure fairness and protection. I don't think that view is evil, but I don't believe it is workable.

May 25, 200719 yr Ace, you crack me up. How about the liberal belief that the government knows better what people should do than people do themselves? Or that the government can spend your money better than the private sector? Or, even still, that your money is really the government's money, and you're lucky the government lets you keep any of it? How about the liberals belief that any time something bad happens to someone, that its got to be somebody else's fault? That when something happens bad to someone, that its the government's role to help them, rather than their neighbor? Or that if you won't help them, we're going to make you help them? We could go on and on here, liberal and conservative. The jury is still out on whether any discussion will be entertaining.

I mean, I think that what you say is true of some people, but I don't buy into it being confined to either liberal or conservative.

I mean, I think that what you say is true of some people, but I don't buy into it being confined to either liberal or conservative. Possibly, but . . . My comments are no more or less oversimplified or generalized than Ace's. In other words, two can play that game. He has ascribed beliefs to liberals as if liberals were the only persons that believed in those principles.

There are nice generalizations and accusations, but still not a repudiations of the statements above. Now I know not everyone agrees with all of those statements, but those are the ones that most liberals are called out on. (poor grammar, but it is Friday afternoon)
May 25, 200719 yr You know what I wish? I wish people would quit trying to pigeon hole whole groups of people based on something like political theocracy. I've found only a very few people actually fit the extreme of any political theory, and most fall somewhere in the middle, kind of weavig over and back of a line down the middle. All these generalizations do is perpetuate ill-will and misunderstanding. These types of excercises are what keep American politics ugly and create apathy among voters. I don't care if "two can play that game" is an age-old saying. So is "two wrongs don't make a right", but I don't see very many people using that one as a defense.

I just used the religious half of my statements to make the point that these seem to be Christian ideas and that many conservatives call themselves evangelicals but would disagree with these teachings. For 4, 6, and 7 if morality is not attempted to be legislated, there are no problems with those issues and people can act privately and can enter into binding contracts. #8. My tax dollars support people being put to death in prisons, and children dieing (sp) in Iraq, along with our soldiers and Iragi soldiers. #9. Making 5.15 and hour and probably 7.25 keeps you poor, and those kind of wages should be "sinful" in this country. #11. We will have to agree to disagree on this one.

I have always felt that, while liberals emphasize all of these created rights, conservatives are more concerned with responsibility. Just listen to the presidential candidates and you quickly learn that the trend continues. I believe in helping and protecting the truly needy. However, I resent supporting the lazy, the con artists, the minks (you know what I mean), the dullards, the criminals, and all the illegals.
May 25, 200719 yr Why is making $7.25 an hour sinful? Do you believe you have a "right" to make a lot of money? Are you entitled to a job? Do employers exist to create jobs for their employees?
