Tubby/UK article in the AJC

Featured Replies

No I don't. I act as if the fans were a big reason Tubby Smith left UK, and in my opinion and many others', they were.

Maybe, I Loved OTS and still do, None of us will ever know what really happened, so Why act like we do?

Just because you choose to live your life that way, doesn't mean the rest of us do...;)

So this is what we talk about when there's a recruiting lull? It'd been a while and I had forgot.

I wasn't jumping up and down when Tubby left, but he did... And I'm well over it... And I hope he has great success in Minnesota.

^^^^.....I 2nd that.

Why did he leave? Under Tubby we had 2 first round picks in 10 years. Pitino could house an NBA team alone.

Before Tubby we are the powerhouse of the SEC. Now Florida is the powerhouse, LSU/Tennessee are on the same page as us and Vandy is lurking.

Tubby can't recruit. If you don't believe go back and watch footage on Cote, Nate Knight, Shagari, Woo, Thomas, Perry. OR any player who would not have been offered at UF or LSU.

There are maybe 10 jobs Tubby can't coach at. UK is one of them. Powerhouse jobs have powerhouse requirments. He is more of the lets get decent kids and try to develop them. Good luck to him at Minn. he can now do that.

Moving on........

Interesting how many UK fans got on there and flamed Moore's blog. Sound like familiar behavior to anyone? :D

Who is Tubby Smith? He sounds like a radio DJ.

When will the national media let this go? This is the best you can come up with 2 months after the fact? Besides that, Tubby was not forced out by the "Wildcat Wackos".

Its no secret. Tubby is a great coach, but doesn't play a style that gets the top recruits - which leads to dissention with the Wildcat fans. Noone, including Tubby, likes to feel unloved or unwanted at their job - so, he did the correct thing by finding happiness and open arms. He wasn't fired or technically "forced out", but he was forced out, if that makes sense. Good luck to Tubby. He is now happy and the Wildcat fans are now happy - until we get our first loss next season (which will likely come early in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, where we'll have to listen to Dickie V. talk about how we chased away one of the best coaches in America)...

I love how the media and anti-UK people now freely admit the program is at a low point, but still refuse to pin that fact on Tubby.

Anti-U.K. people  , am I anti U.K. bc I supported Tubby? I don't think so  . Imo the ones that are U.K. fans and continually bash are doing more harm than good. I am not going to get into this again, it has been talked about quite enough on here. You would think that the Tubby bashing would stop since the bashers got what they wanted but that is obviously still not good enough  . Keep on beating that dead horse if you so choose but don't be telling people that they are anti-U.K. when you have no idea :irked: , better get you another crystal ball, that mind reading one that you are using is cracked. :D As for any more response on this I will take the     approach.

John Clay sums up my feelings well--

There was a fine and probably well-meaning column in the Atlanta Constitution-Journal on Sunday in which Terence Moore talks with Tubby Smith and makes the usual, false assumptions about what caused the former Kentucky coach to take his skills to Minnesota.

"Even so," writes Moore, "it was whine, whine, whine by those Wildcat Wackos, still worshiping Adolph Rupp's ghost and Rick Pitino's shadow."

What's it going to take for these guys to get the story right?

Smith didn't bolt from the Bluegrass because of crazy fan expectations or Tubby bashers, no matter how prevalent or ridiculous both factors might have been. Smith had lived with both for most of his 10 years in Lexington, and he has too much pride to cut and run over a little extra heat in the kitchen.

Smith left for one simple reason: He could not see eye-to-eye with athletics director Mitch Barnhart. ("When the boss doesn't support you, time to find a new boss," as Denny Crum said after the Smith departure.) There had been a few disagreements between the two over scheduling, staff, etc., leading up to the showdown over Smith's assistant coaches that came at the end of this past season. Barnhart demanded a shake-up in staff. Smith disagreed. Minnesota was calling. So Smith answered the call.

You can make the case Barnhart was right and Smith was wrong, that Kentucky basketball was on a downward arc over the last two years. You can make a case that Tubby's staff was in dire need of an overhaul. But, in Smith's view, the merit of Barnhart's demand was not nearly as important as the man making the demand. Had previous athletics director C.M. Newton, who hired Smith, called for the change, Tubby would have probably done so out of respect for the man who hired him. That wasn't the case with Barnhart. Smith dug in his heels. By the end, the two men were not on the same page. Note even close.

You can also make the case that it was fan pressure and expectations that caused Barnhart to take such a stand. You can also contend an insecure Barnhart cared far more about how he was perceived by the fan base than he did about his relationship with his basketball coach, one who had represented the university in classy fashion for a decade. Doesn't matter. What's done is done. Both have moved on. Billy Clyde is the story now.

But on a national level, the Tubby myth won't die. Smith may indeed be happier in Minnesota, as Moore contends. But he no longer being the Kentucky coach had more to do with the man in the athletics director's office than the "wackos" in the Rupp Arena seats.

I don't think the style of play had as much to do with it as Smith and his assistants' lackluster efforts on the recruiting trail.

The thing of it is, Gillispe plays the same methodical style (a fact probably lost on most UK fans, since the only time they probably saw A&M was during the L'ville game). He's just more energetic on the recruiting trail.

I watched Texas A&M play about 5-6 times last season and they were about 100 times more exciting to watch than UK has been for the past few years.

They played the same style....The only difference is they were more talented, and the players were smarter.
