May 18, 200719 yr Donovan to Become NCAA Highest Paid Coach Florida basketball coach Billy Donovan, who led the Gators to back-to-back national championships this past season and then turned down a lucrative offer to become Kentucky's coach, is close to signing a seven-year contract extension with the Gators that will pay him an average of more than $3.5 million per season, sources close to the situation said Thursday. The new contract, which Donovan hasn't yet signed, will pay the coach around $3 million the first year. The contract then escalates to more than $3.75 in guaranteed income by the end of the contract in 2013-14, a person familiar with the negotiations said. The deal also includes several performance-based incentives that could make the deal worth as much as $4 million per season by the end of the contract.
May 18, 200719 yr Author ^I don't think signing an extension would stop him from going to the NBA if the offer was right...
May 18, 200719 yr No amount of money will keep him out of the NBA if he so desires. Urban Meyer is smiling.

May 18, 200719 yr Extension or no extension, Billy D's days in the NCAA are numbered. He's got a dream to be an NBA coach and that is what he will do, IMO.

May 18, 200719 yr Guess the meeting with the magic didn't go so well. May have been just what he wanted to accomplish . His price going up. Mr. Florida AD, you have a call from Urban Meyers requesting a meeting.....
May 18, 200719 yr When all this UK talk was going on all you guys were saying how Florida wouldn't pay him Urban Meyer money, how they could never offer what UK was offering? What happened?
May 18, 200719 yr When all this UK talk was going on all you guys were saying how Florida wouldn't pay him Urban Meyer money, how they could never offer what UK was offering? What happened? The NBA came calling and if these #s are accurate, are still not enough to keep him there, if and when he decides to go...It's hard to say if UF would have matched UKs offer because it never got to negotiations with the Cats.. They most likely would have opened the bank to whatever he asked for, but, UF would have countered, I'm sure...I, for one, never said UF wouldn't match or get close to UKs offer. Those that felt otherwise only felt that way because they couldn't see BD making more than Meyer. I'm pretty sure there will be some negotiations with him coming real soon...

I have no idea how, but they said it.
