I miss white cleats like we wore in high school.

I miss old Crosley field.

I miss the smell of pine tar, and how it just got all over everything (not that you really cared, it kind of looked cool).

I miss parents who could sit and enjoy a game without feeling the urge to criticize someone at the game.

I miss casual fans and parents who would fill out a scorecard through the course of the game.

I miss coaches who know the rules.

I miss kids who played from sun up to sun down, whether they had a game or not, and loved every minute of it. And no college scholarships were involved....

I miss 3 flys & six grounders, and throwing blocks into your competitors while trying to make the catch.

I miss "strike out" with a strike zone painted on the wall.

I miss "home run derby, where you had to clear the old oak tree for a home run, but over the close line was a double.

I miss tossing with my dad and listening to Waite Hoyt

I miss playing catch with my brother in the back yard and seeing who could catch the most ground balls thrown to them without making an error

I miss playing whiffle ball in the back yard of my friend, Steve Tanner, who died while serving our Country in Nam, oh so many, many years ago

I miss not seeing kids just playing pickup games, right field out, pickle or as DD posted strike out.....

Oh the hours I played baseball, from sun up to sun down, as that was all we had, each other, a bat, a ball and a glove....

But most of all, I miss playing the game I love.....Baseball

OK....who is up for a BGP oldtimers game? I'll get the field. We can choose up sides on line or at the field with a wood bat...no bottle caps.

:thumb: I can agree with everyone of your statements on this one! I would also add as others have playing with desire and hustle and for the love of the game. I also miss the high stirrups (don't like the pants pulled down to the ankles at all). I miss picking up sides, tossing the bat and the "hands up the bat" to see who bats first.I miss the sunflower seeds being spit all over the dugout floor and Yes, I MISS WOODEN BATS!! I can't stand that "ping" of the metal bats, bring back the sound of the "crack of the bat"!:ylsuper: These are just some of the things that I misss most about this great game.

I miss seeing kids in the yard playing whiffle ball on a hot summer day.

I spent many a summer playing one-on-one in the backyard. Its how I learned to hit left-handed.

Great times.

When I was growing up, if you had stirrups that didn't come up high enough, you snipped them at the bottom, had your mom sew in the elastic, and then jacked them up.

I also miss the parades that took place prior to opening day & seeing the kids smile when they received their first uniform with their favorite number on the back. I also misss throwing in the backyard with my son.

I miss playing pepper before a game. I miss hearing the umpire yell "PLAY BALL". I miss taking BP everyday. I miss playing the best game ever invented. Most of all, I miss talking baseball and listening to the Reds on radio with my Dad.

How about the hustle and love/respect for the game?

Great post !!!

I agree with alot of the things on here I too miss .The qoute is the one that bothers me and I miss .I have coached for a number of years and have always told the kids bust your tail on every play ."Play every play like it may be your last "

I insist on running everything out ,back to the pitcher pop or anything .

I have them be "students of the game ".It is amazing what one can learn sitting on the bench .

There is a sub-division my buddy lives in where there is a corner lot that has no house .There seems to be kids playing there alot .His kid and mine are best friends and have played there for the last 6 years ,getting to big know though .It is fun to go watch with no adults involved how the kids do .
