Does anyone miss those thick wool or cotton uniforms?

Remember the iron on letters on the hats

:thumb: I can remember those uni's. On a hot day they would weigh about 50lbs. by the time the game was over.

Sure do and I am a proud member of that club. :thumb: :D

Hey what about...umpires with outside protectors. Black pants...white shirt with black coat and bow tie.

I can remember like it was yesterday, coming home with my first real baseball uniform in 1956. It was a wool BFD uniform and my ball cap had a ironed on BFD on it. It was without a doubt the most beautiful uniform that I ever wore. I can remember wearing it to bed on the night of my first game against the Readers Plumbers at the old Decorusey fields in Covington. Didn't sleep a wink that night but we won, and when we got back to our hometown the gentlemen who owned the local grocery store bought us all cokes. It was great....:thumb:

I spent many a summer playing one-on-one in the backyard. Its how I learned to hit left-handed.

Great times.

I also still remember my one v one games with my neighbor, we even kept stats, actually played some Mother's Day wiffleball today, struck out my first two bats then I started raking, the wife also was drilling the ball to gaps. I miss those polyester pullovers, and those battles against LYC, Ludlow AC, Blessed Sacrament and others.

My son has a few wooden bats he likes to take BP with, I was tellin him one day about those wooden bats that used to have what looked like a corn cob on the handle. I use to love those.

Back in the 70s when I was a kid, my buddy and I would be the Reds vs Dodgers. If Davey Lopes was up, you'd bat right-handed. If Joe Morgan was up, you'd bat left-handed. Add in the hot neighbor who lived next to me and we'd ALWAYS be in the back yard playing ball.

Hunting for pop bottles to have .25 for a "decent" rubber ball for strike-out.

Rounding up all the kids in the neighborhood to "get up a game."

Dirt and sweat all caked togehter after a hard ballgame.

Grabbing ahndfull of dirt toget a better grip on the bat.

Playing ball all day until you heard your mom yelling for you to come eat supper.

Playing pickle in the street.

Houseball.

Did he play too? ;)

As the youngest in my family with 2 older brothers, I wasn't always old enough to play when they would play baseball in our backyard. We had a golf net with a strike zone right by our house & we'd play with ragballs. They'd pitch to strike people out & throw curveballs long before I could throw one that did anything but spin.

So I went out and bought some equipment to become the home plate umpire hoping that I could get at least 1 at-bat every inning. :D

I miss throwing the ball against a wall and waiting just long enough you could make a diving catch to save the game.

I miss taping up the wiffle ball so I could throw a curve ball like the pros.

I miss the metal bat and tennis ball to see who could hit the ball the furthest.

I miss sitting at a game and watching the little things that win games instead of waiting around for someone to hit it out.

I miss the carpet burn I use to get from practicing my sliding in the hall way of the house.

I miss playing pitchers hand.

I miss the eye black.

However I miss the company of my friends and brother.

My favorite memory was when the whiffle ball got stuck about 15 feet up into an evergreen tree. We tried to throw a glove up there to dislodge the ball. The glove became stuck also, so we threw another glove. At one time there were 6 gloves, two bats and a whiffle ball stuck in that old evergreen tree. After about an hour and 1000 more throws of varous equiptment and shoes, we finally recovered all the stuff and the game resumed.

We used to put blankets down in the living room so we could slide on the carpet and limit the carpet burns.

Also, there's nothing like watering the lawn for a little bit so you could go for a long-distance slide in what seemed to be a "life or death" game of pickle.
