Does ANYONE remember the vertical hold button on televisions?

I only had 1 channel growing up. We lived in a valley (a "holler").

 

We didn't have a phone until I was 10. I wrote letters to friends over the summer.

 

We didn't get any air conditioning until I was 16.

YOU NEED to point out that they lived in the SAME COUNTY AS YOU. I remember doing that too.

 

I was the riding lawnmover behind a push mower until I went to college. Mom did it the first time after I was in college and in 3 days they had purchased a riding mower.

On the river we didn't have wake boards or knee boards, we used whatever piece of ply wood would drift down the river. We use to walk up river, push the big logs off the beach and float back down to the camp. Ahhhh the good ole days.

If anyone put 100,000 miles on a car, it was astounding.

 

Nobody drove nearly as much as we do today. My Mom went to the store once a week and we took care of other errands at that time. She bought what we needed for that week and we ate at home. (and we ate what she fixed). If she forgot something, we did without it til next week. There was none of this running out to the convenience store for bread and milk. No making 4 or 5 trips a day out for whatever reason.

 

Other than going to church, she didn't drive much at all besides that weekly trip to the store and to run errands.

My mother is 83 and never did get her drivers licence,could you imagine. we had party line phones I would always listen to what the nieghbor ladies were talking about.

Remember going saining for minnows and crawdads before fishing? One of my fondest memories with my grandpa and dad.

 

Or going outside early in the morning to get nightcrawlers before going fishing that evening?

When I was in the 6th grade we took a family vacation to Florida with 7 people in the car. I spent most of the trip laying on the shelf or whatever you call it in the back window.How fast would you be pulled over today for that? Also we lived across the street from the river and our neighbors on the river side had a dock with a houseboat and ski boat. Either myself or cousin or our best friend would be sure to be dating one of the daughters over the summer to get in on some fun times on the river.

When we went on trips, not only did one of us sleep on the car floor, one would sleep under the rear windshield.

 

How many of you ever made your skateboard out of a 2X4 with your sister's skates nailed to it?

Anyone's parent have a Volkswagon Beetle and you rode in the storage compartment BEHIND the back seat and under the read windshield and OVERTOP the engine?

Finally, a subject for us old guys. LBBC, I recall riding on trips on the little shelf between the back window and the rear seat.

 

2C, we had three channels also, all out of Knoxville. However, the antenna was mounted on a long 2" round steel pole fastened to the side of the house and reaching from the ground to just above the highest point on the roof. To change channels, one of us would have to go outside and twist the pole to turn the antenna in a different direction while someone inside would stand at the window and watch the tv to tell us when we had turned the antenna far enough. Good 'ol days. Hardly. I love my remote and it seldom leaves my hand when watching TV.

We got 3 TV channels and we had no VCRs, etc. You were at the mercy of the networks (there was no cable channels) and you watched what they wanted you to watch. You couldn't just pop in a movie. If you watched a movie, you went to the theater.

 

If you missed a TV program, you missed it. We got 30 minutes of cartoons every afternoon (Mr Cartoon Show on WSAZ) and then a morning of cartoons on Saturday. That was it.

 

The Charlie Brown Christmas, The Grinch, The Wizard of OZ, etc. were shows that came on once a year, and you made darn sure you were there and ready when they came on. If you missed it,... well we covered that already.

 

The news came on twice a day and you made sure you watched it at 11 so you could get the sports and weather. There was no other way to find out who won the days MLB games, short of listening to the Reds on radio and waiting for the rundown, even then you missed all the west coast scores until the following day.

 

The nightly news anchors were like movie stars. They were your window into the world, as there was really no other up-to-date information source. And even they were usually several hours behind in telling you of major events.

 

 

I was on Mr. Cartoon 3 times and once I got to say "rollum" into the mic...(this was for roll them) and I still have my picture with him and Beeper. I thought that life get no better than this... :lol:

No one remember the television picture rolling across the screen and someone having to get up and turn the vertical hold button to get the picture to stop rolling across the screen?
