Some athletes at younger ages are actually choosing to play with select teams rather than play for their school teams during the summer...while this may give instant gratification to the athelete/parent it is really not helping them in the long run in my opinion, that is depending on the situation, some athletes may not have very good coaching with school aau and could possibly benefit from playing select ball......if i was a dad...my kid would be playing with the school team!

Whether you think it is a threat or not, you have to admit that when a kid is playing at a facility with 6 courts and there are over 40 colleges represented it is beneficial to the athlete. A kid may get seen by more coaches in one weekend than he would his whole season at a highschool. Unless you have major potential or have established yourself as a "stud" you are going to have major div-1 coaches walking through your gym. There is so much talent now that coaches prefer to go to a tourny with 30 or 40 teams vs driving/flying a great distance to see one or two players.

What motivation does the AAU sponsors or coaches have? Money, ego?

Good point beta...with the athletes the age that I am talking about 12-14 year olds, if any parent is worried about college scouts then something is wrong. Until the last day of school, soph's through seniors for next year have to be playing on a select team, it is illegal for them to play for their school aau team right now unless it is just for open gym. 12-14 year olds are chosing to play on traveling teams coached and paid for by daddy dearist and then when they come and play on a school team they have what I call "aau syndrome" and the parents still think they have a say in how the team (school) is coached..... There are also some positives of select aau as far as athletes get to play against more compeititon but more times than not the select aau coaches are simply trying to line their own pockets with money or are trying to feed a ego...just my opinion

I believe it is more often damaging than productive. Too many AAU coaches have alterior motives. Its got to where AAU coaches are more powerful than high school coaches. It makes some kids hard to coach because they listen to too much stuff that their AAU coaches say.

I believe this is the problem at a certain Western Ky high school full of talent.

Definite threat I wish the KHSAA or someone could run them off. It all started due to people trying to get more time and getting their kids to play together all summer, now it is leading to the exploitation of High school athletes.

Asset for the exceptionally talented because it allows him/her to play against those of comparable talent and to be scene by college coaches who would possibly not travel to Harlan, Central City, or wherever just to see him/her.

 

Of course it has its share of problems. However, high school teams are not always coached by knowledgeable individuals of stellar character either. I would also question the effect of KHSAA with its often political rulings. I don't necessarily blame KHSAA for this because it is sometimes just an unwilling player in how the "system" works.

AAU isnt all bad. It gets players playing ball in the off season and working on their game, which is good. But there is also a lot of stuff that is not good that goes along with it.
