April 13, 200719 yr The players from Duke, like you say will have this scar forever, there is nothing scarring about some words some idiot on a radio talk show utters out about. By the way, he was actually saying they were some tough girls, just did it wrong. Those rutgers were never called rapists and labeled like that and arrested, thrown in jail, and hauled around in courtrooms and had cameras shoved in their faces. Rutgers has to ask for cameras to come.
April 13, 200719 yr I'm guessing that you've never been accused of a sexual crime. You're scarred from day 1, whether you're guilty or not. And just because your case gets dismissed, it doesn't change the trauma or your legal bills that occured in the months before. Most people would have forgotten about the Rutgers comments, had they even been aware of them to start with, in a short period of time. The Duke lacross team will have this hang over their heads for the rest of their lives. We agree. What would that get them? While people will forget about these girls in a month, these boys will have this follow them forever. A hollow apology would be a waste of time. There really is nothing these boys can do to repair their images. That's a shame. However, any public outcry from me, you, President Bush, or Oprah is not going to change the fact that these boys will carry this stigma with them forever. What would be a fair "outcry" in your estimation?

April 13, 200719 yr Why aren't Sharpton and Jackson marching for their rights, as they were for the accusers? Considering that many blacks think that the two Revs do not represent them, I'm not sure what these boys would get out of a photo op.
April 13, 200719 yr I would assume the Rutgers players could sue for defamation of character or slander, couldn't they? No, I'm pretty sure they can't.

April 13, 200719 yr Considering that many blacks think that the two Revs do not represent them, I'm not sure what these boys would get out of a photo op. They were two of the first there to proclaim how guilty they were though when charges first came about....Sounds hypocritcal to me.

What would be a fair "outcry" in your estimation? I don't believe that the Rutgers outcry was a "fair" outcry. I believe that it did more damage than made people aware. On the other hand, the people of Durham should be in an absolute uproar demanding that the entire prosecutor's office be investigated for other wrongdoings. Who knows whether or not this has happened in the past, and there may be wrongly imprisoned citizens.

There really is nothing these boys can do to repair their images. That's a shame. You're not saying they don't deserve an apology are you? If you are, WOW, I don't even know what to say about that. How about the faculty members at Duke that treated them like garbage, had presumed them guilty until proven innocent. Do you remember when people were chanting "dead men walking" with bullhorns at them? These guys deserve an apology from a lot of people including Sharpton and Double J, regardless of how "hollow" you think it would be.
April 13, 200719 yr Author How would anything make the news if it were not for the media?Making the news and blowing something out of proportion in the news are not the same thing or anything remotely close.
April 13, 200719 yr First, I think this was blown all out of proportion. I also wonder if the rap group, from Kentucky, is going to have to change their name from Nappy Roots to something more politically correct?
April 14, 200719 yr Nifong is a disgrace. In fact, his name is going down in legal circles as a verb, as in defense attorneys telling a judge they've "been Nifonged" by a prosecutor. The interesting element to all of this is the defense attorneys for the boys. Brilliant job, and I would say the minimum retainer they have received is probably $1M. How many people that cannot afford this type of representation are wrongfully imprisoned?

Although, I'm not exactly sure what they would be.
April 14, 200719 yr Making the news and blowing something out of proportion in the news are not the same thing or anything remotely close. You and I and everyone else are what causes a story to be blown out of proportion. The media gives us what we want, right?
April 14, 200719 yr Author You and I and everyone else are what causes a story to be blown out of proportion. The media gives us what we want, right? Not exactly, I know I sure get tired of a lot of the stupid crap they go overboard with. Like weather alerts for instance. :creepy:
