Because the Enquirer is the paper of record in the area. Not because I live in Cincinnati. If your reach is 40 miles in one direction which is it toward Williamstown, then the coverage should be in all directions, not just one.

 

In the case of the All "A" State tournament, their reporter was already there. The posts on his blog were well after Gallatin County played. Would it have hurt to do a story on another team that was already within their radius anyway??

 

Not that I'm just harping on about Gallatin County. I would be saying the same thing if Williamstown would have went or if Owen County won. They probably wouldn't have covered them either since they are 52 miles away.

 

It's not just high school sports either. Coverage of sports in general. There is a hockey team in Cincinnati that plays about 6-7 blocks from the Enquirer. They're in the playoffs. Do they get any coverage either?? No.

 

Since I broadcast high school sports, that's what I care about.

 

It's simply not about journalism integrity. It's about money.

I totally agree with all said but the best way to boycott the lack of news about local schools is to hit them in the pocket book. Cancel your subscriptions, it is better to have no news than it is to have news that is not valid to your area. If you force a media in on my domain and expect me to pay for it you better cover things in my interest base, If you don't I will not read your paper or watch your network. It is as simple as that.

Do you really realize how many high schools are in the immediate Greater Cincinnati Area of Hamilton, Butler, Warren, Clemont, Boone, Kenton, Campbell, and Indiana counties that are much closer, and more populated, than Gallatin? Do you think the majority of HS sports fans in those counties want the limited coverage that they receive now, to get even smaller, so the 8,000 or so people of Gallatin, get some coverage? I will ask you this, do you think the Enquirer gets enough money in ads, and in subscription fees from Gallatin County to afford to give you the coverage you request? As cch5432 stated, it all about money.....

As I said above, It's more than just Gallatin County. I agree with Jim Schue, there needs to be a daily Northern KY Paper. A while back he had talked about doing a paper that would cover the areas not covered by the Enquirer. The Sunday Challenger (now gone) was a nice paper. The Dixie News (also now gone) did an excellent job of covering the extreme Northern Kentucky. When the Post leaves, there will be nothing.

 

I also agree with SteelCurtain. Either cover it all or not at all. We've lived with the latter so far. I guess that's the way it is.

 

If it's all about the money, then I guess maybe the next step is to call the shop owners from the 71-75 split and tell them to not sell the Enquirer. If they don't want to cover the news in the area, no reason to sell the paper in the area.

Couple of comments here.

 

The Post was worse than the Enquirer in covering fringe counties. Pendleton County was not even given votes in the top 10. When PC was #2 in the region in girls basketball, there were coaches that voted for them as the top 10 in NKY for the Post. But when you looked at the others receiving votes, they weren't even listed there.

 

I have had a couple of personal conversations with the Enquirer HS reporter and he always seemed to be eager to cover the counties out of the "normal" NKY range.

 

As far as Gallatin, Grant, Pendleton and the likes are considered, check out the subscriptions in your county. If they are very small to non-existent, the coverage is going to be less for economical reasons.

Not enough though. An area of our population would be well served by it's own paper. Although, I have to say, The Recorder newspapers do a real nice job. I just wish they were somehow consolidated into a single format.

Grant County did get some press time a couple years back when they beat your mighty Bluebirds in football:lol: during their last State Championship year. joking, GC was talking about putting a banner up but I think they figured a major butt whooping would likely follow if they did that

Back to the real topic at hand, the region that has the majority of income producing advertisers and readers is going to get the bulk of the limited amount of budget for high school sports. Often the best source I've found is to try and find a local paper that covers the specific team most of them publish once a week. My favorite paper that covered Northern KY sports was the Dixie News, it mainly covered the 9th region schools but would sometimes drift to the 8th & 10th Regions.

Yes they do. I'm not trying to slight the "Local Paper". The Gallatin County News, The Madison Courier, the Owenton News Herald, the Grant County News, etc. all do a nice job. Couple of things though. For the most part, they are weekly. The Gallatin County News does not have a web presence.

 

The Madison Courier is very nice because they update things on a daily basis.

The Enquirer was all over the story when a local official was arrested. What makes sports coverage any different. News is news. Do you think they will cover when Gallatin County plays Scott County the defending KY State Champion next year?? Probably not.

 

 

Officials being arrested is not an everyday occurence however I can go watch 20 games on any Friday night.

The News Democrat of Carrollton is terrible for sports, they devote 1/2 a page to coverage ( which is supplied by a local high school student ) but they give the local public record 2 pages. You are definitely more newsworthy if you are speeding than if you are a Middle School basketball team.

 

The Madison Courier does a great job.!
